I'm new to the ATV world, and I'm starting to get really interested into it. My family owns to 4wheelers already, 01' 350 rancher es, and a 84' 125 yamaha moto 4. I'm looking for a sport quad, preferably Honda or Yamaha. Any suggestions.

yfz,450r,400ex, raptor 350 those are the 4 best quads that those two companies make, well at least for race quads. u cant go wrong with either of the 4 i just mentioned. oh and dont forget the z400

Yea i've been really looking into a 400ex. I'm not goin to race it, i'd kill myself. Mainly just trail ride and some hometown tracks around here. I'm not really looking for a new one. A used quad but in good condition.

good choice u can find dirt cheap 400ex's now adays they have good power, and the new ones have reverse so that would be good for trail riding. u would like it alot. there a great quad.

Do you know of any minor or some small upgrades to give a little bit more HP to the 400?

slip on pipe, take airbox lid off, jet it, air filter... then u get into cams, pistons and other things.

what are some brands of pipes that are high quality pipes for a good price?

11-16-2005, 07:48 PM
hmf, and fmf for a cheap price, and they add lots of power if you go fmf, get the t-4, otherwise you'll go up to 800$ for the best pipe

tc shorty's r good, even thought everyone rips on them. yes they dont make good hp gains but there torgue gains are insane, and torgue is what turns the wheels not hp.

Raptor 350?

This is NOT a race quad - I'd hardly call it a sport quad.

hey i was giving him two from each company, 400ex and 450r for honda, and the yfz and raptor 350. but now that i think of it i wouldnt even have putten it down. and i didnt put the raptor because i dont consider it a quad just a big pile of crap.

well i dont want somethin to small that i have to upgrade out my ***** b/c i want more power. I've been finding 400ex's for DIRT CHEAP. thing is i dont have the money right now...basketball season is in and i dont have a time for a job. And i don't want somethin like a huge *** 700 raptor, i'd kill myself, too much to handle for a starter.

If your Looking into the used market, Try and see if you can get one with an aftermarket suspension, that will save you a few grand down the road. Then throw a sparks pipes on it, a K&N filter, re-jet it and you have a nice setup!

Ok. that makes alotta sense. Is the stock suspension just that bad on some quads?

yes some stock suspension is really crappy.

well, to be honest... usually the rear suspension isnt too bad on most quads... OEM does a pretty good job on that part (for the regular trail rider, and C class motocrosser) but once u get into B and A class racing.. then the stock rear suspension just doesnt cut it anymore. but for the beginner rider, the rear suspension will be just fine... and as far as the front goes... unless u are into motocross, or andthing like that... stock suspension works fine. and wut i would suggest.... if ur goona go aftermarket. save ur money for long travel. may cost u around 1600 for the front end... but it sure beats standard travel. and its worth every penny.
