Newer Remington 11-87 with at best 500 rounds thru it, mainly field loads decided it didnt wanna stay together.

I picked up a new slug barrel and scope today, installed it, bore sighted it and had just sent the 3rd round down range. the 4th round hang fired, so i kept the weapon pointed safely and when i tougched the safety...KABOOOM:mad:

Disassembled the weapon and found the wishbone connector (part that connects the slide to the recoil spring) bent and broke.

I havent kept up with gun forums etc, but found this alarming it being a remington. any info out there?

ouch , that sucks ! while hunting ducks in canada a couple weeks ago hondardr4life's 12 guage browning gold got all messed up . He unscrewwed the part that holds the barrel onto the stock while the gun was loaded not thinking because we were bored of sitting there for 7 hours and not shooting much . It was really funny to see springs and plastic pieces shoooting all over the place .:D

Good thing that you're alright . I've seen pictures of people after guns have blew up on them .... not a pretty sight . :ermm:

I have rarely heard of any problems from remingtons. We have 3 870 pump that have had thousands and thousands of rounds through them when we were trap shooting every week and never had any trouble. We also have 2 1100 12ga which have never given any trouble. How heavy load were you shooting? Only guns I have ever heard of exploding had some type of blockage in the barrel.

hope you didnt get hurt from this, man i would be pissed! i wonder if i can find any pics of what happens when you give air force people m-16's... i used to have some and they all looked like they got hurt pretty bad... glad you had it pointed downrange, thats why everyone should always follow the rules!!!

no damage to me, merely parts breakage.

this is the special purpose 11-87 and has handled 3 inch T shot magnum loads for geese, and slugs to 3 inches. i have a feeling it was just plain bad luck, but i wont ever trust it again. i reckon ill have to go buy a new one :ermm:

I have never heard of anything like that from a 11-87. We have had a few and never had any problems. They always seemed to function well even covered in mud and ice in the duck blind. I have heard of problems with older 1100's, mostly 20 gauges, but most of that was jamming problems. I'm a big fan of Remington shotguns so I agree it must have been a freak accident (still scary as hell). Glad your alright.

P.S. You better leave that slug gun at home when you come hunting with me. You got anything that can reach out and touch them at 300+ yards.:D

i figured it up and handloading for the 50 would be around $2.50 a round:p add the $3600 price tag and its pretty NOT cheap:D

I know, I've seen some pictures of your targets, but 300 yards is my limit of helping you drag them out of the marsh.:p

My brother has seen some of those 50's at work in shoots in Michigan. They are pretty impressive, but have a hefty price tag. If I really wanted to do ultra long range I'd look at one of the big 30 calibers, a nice 700 action, custom barrel. A lot cheaper and more versatile.

I have shot a lot of trap with a 11-87 and have broke a few of them. I allways carryed a spare one all the time. It's called
Link get a new one. But check your trigger group. You said it
went off when you pushed off the safety. And how big is the gas hole in that slug barrel.

Pappy

the barrel is for the gun, and i was actually using cheap remington slugs to get it on the paper. i usually only shoot 2 3/4 slugs so i dont believe over pressure caused any issues.

the "link" was mangled, not sure why it broke, i will turn it over to my friend the gun smith and have him check it out. i suspect the link broke or atleast bent the shot or two prior, causing the link to bind the slide. when it finally hung up, touching the safety provided enough movement to allow the unit to move and "boom"

Nick, i had a 300 ultra mag on the sendero platform. worked wonders to 700 yards on deer. anything under 200 yards and it was almost too much. i have used a 700 in 06 for ever it seems and she has never failed me. ive pulled some insane shots with it that most folks wouldnt believe could be done(good training;) )

I havent looked into the new short magnums, the 06 just gets it done so well i havent had the need. :D

My brother Dan shoots a 300 WSM. It is a cheap Savage but shoots tight little groups (actually all of our Savages shoot pretty well). I know what you mean about the Ultra mag being too much up close. My older brother has a 338 Lapua Mag. Something about a 200 grain ballistic tip at close to 3500 fps was too much for deer under 200 yards. The 30-06 is a great gun, there is a reason it has been around for 100 years. Anyways let us know what the gunsmith finds out. I'd like to know seeing as I have an 11-87.

That sounds like an awesome week. We can definitely find a day later in the week that will work. I'll try and give you a call next week sometime to pick a day that will work best. I can take off whenever.

Off the subject, are you gonna be at Tomahawk for the Ironboss race? I'm trying to go just need to find a partner (someone seems to have all my buddies frames:p ) You should come out of retirement or have Kevin put some xc tires on and be my partner.:D

Man now I'll be a little nervous the next time I take my shotgun out considering its a cheap 80's model mossberg 12 ga that's easily had a 1000 rounds run through it. Glad to hear you weren't hurt though.

I have one for ya ken. This happened a LONG time ago but i still have the gun. I was out shooting with several friends. 7-8 at least. We were all lined up side by side and i was on the end. With one guys truck over my left shoulder. We were all shooting at cans we had set up to see who could knock down their set first. I fired the first shot and it was SO loud my ears rang like a bell with ear plugs. I felt a little spark on my index finger , but thought nothing of it. Went to take the 2nd shot and i couldnt pull the trigger. I pullmy hands down to see my S&W model 66 with the barrell hanging, about to fall off.well the pics will show. 3 rounds fired at once. We found a good size peice of the cyclinder inside the truck. After it went tru the camper shell and the back of the truck.Other than a 1/16 inch nick on my finger noone was hurt. I had to just sit down i was shaken up so bad. Sent the gun back and they said it was due to shooting reloads!

What was the chamber size, and what size slugs were being used?

Although some barrels are labeled for 3 inch shells, the reciever has to be able to handle the load. There are many 2/3 4 recievers out there that 3 inch barrels can slip into.
