I cannot figure this question out.

A titanium bat weighs 35 lbs. How many atoms of Ti are in it??

Second part of the question is:

If the bat was made entirely of Ti-50, how many total neutrons are in the 35 lb bat?

Yea, I know it is going to be a big number.

That is why you have to put it into SN (scientific notation)

All I can say is the obvious, Find the weight of a titanium atom. Convert it into a tiny fraction of a lb. Then divide it by 35. Sorry I cant help you with numbers, I am in chemistry, but I'm just a sophomore, so our class isnt all that hard right now.

You got 204.3 grams per mole in each Ti molecule. It is atomic number 81 so it has 81 protons and approx 123.3 neutrons (204.3-81). 35 pounds is equal to 15875.734 grams. Convert those grams to moles and you have 77.71 Ti molecules in 35 lbs of Ti. I think that's right someone correct me if i'm not.

Not sure about the second one though because i'm not sure what Ti-50 is, what is the 50? Is it an isotope?

Thanks for the nice words :) Organic Chem is my worst class too, I hate it with a passion

convert 35 lbs into grams. you know the molecular weight of Ti.

one mole of Ti weighs whatever its molecular weight is on the periodic table

one mole is 6.022X10^23 atoms.

35lbs
convert to grams
divide by molecular weight to find # of moles
multiply by avagadro's number (6.022X10^23)
= number of Ti atoms in 35 lbs.

to solve the 2nd part just multiply the number of atoms by however many neutrons are in each atom (subtract atomic number from atomic mass to find # of neutrons). i think this would be 154 neutrons/atom, therefore multiply your answer from above by 154.
