I have a white bros exhaust on my 400ex. There are about 15 disks and a cap on the end of the pipe. The cap is removeable, so can i take some disks off and gain horsepower or will i do damage to the engine, timing, backpressure..etc.??

removing the cap will cause you to lose hp, but changing how many discs there are will change where your power band is, add some, higher revving but less low end, remove some, more low end but not as much high end

You can remove some discs, running 12 is usually about right on the 400ex. More discs means more noise and maybe a bit more power if jetted accordingly.

the more disks the more top end and the less botom end. and the less disks the more botom.

i took all the disks out and made my e-series a shorty and it had good power. and i put a 165 main jet in

I had one on my 400. I took the end cap out and left the rest of the disks on. It had great power like that. I would suggest leaving all the disks on, but its up to you.
