Has anyone tried the Craftsman powder coating system i seen it online for some special and was just wondering if it was any good? Ive been looking at a gun in eastwood to start doing little stuff. Is this better than the eastwood kit?

I've heard about people baking smaller parts in a home oven.

i was looking to get this but you can only do things that you can fit in your oven. If you wanted to do your frame you would have to talk the local pizza shop into letting you bake your frame in their oven. lol :blah:

But if you think about it... on a quad... the frame is pretty much the ONLY thing that wouldnt fit in home oven... it sounds pretty cool to me.. it would be an awesome skill to learn too..

You can use a home oven but I wouldnt use one that you normally cook food in. The reason why is I think I remember hearing something about the chemicals from the powder will get in your oven and arent very good for you.

www.columbiacoatings.com

brian will get you everything you need!

they also sell a small oven, but an old house oven will work for many many many small parts and is way more efficient then a commercial oven.

thanks pappy! im thinking if i do this, i will probably just end up using my oven at home, i just like the idea that i can do it myself whenever i want, no shipping, waiting, or relying on anyone else. if something goes wrong, that just means i would have to practice more! and i could change colors every week if i wanted to.

Pappy,

Is it really possible to get a decent home PC gun for about $100-$150 like some of the ones that are sold by Columbia Coatings?

From your experience are there better companies and guns that are a "best value" in your opinion?

www.eastwoodcompany.com sells a gun that i actually started with. its a bottom cup gun and works decent for what it is. its simple, no adjustments etc.

www.columbiacoatings.com sells the craftsman, a top cup gun and even commercial units. for the $150 and under crowd id suggest the eastwood gun as a starter, but if the craftsman gun works it could easily be ok as a starter but i have my doubts.

just from expierence, a bottom fed cup gun works better and flows powder more evenly then the top mounted guns. for most solid colors, the hobby guns work well for small parts.

i have the hot coat pro gun that sells for like $800 and it works ok, but has its limits also. i also have a corona gun that was $1800 and i use the $800 gun more often
:p

its not hard to get started in powdercoating as long as you have some room, some money and patience.
