as great as a 250r is, its not the best starter atv. i would suggest the honda 400ex, its pretty user friendly power wise, handling, matainance, and aftermarket support.

well wouldnt it depend on how old you are?
also how inexperianced yo are?
my first quad was a 250ex. not the best but good to learn on and easy to ride and take care off.
just my opinion

id go with a honda 300ex. great for somebody starting out and they can be modded pretty nicely to be raced.

Go with a Honda 300ex. If you are inexperienced a 250r might be little much. You are probably already too big for a Blaster. The 300ex is perfect and it has the Honda name on it and wont break down on you. It is a very reliable machine.

What kind/brand etc is the ATV you have now? Do you want to use a clutch, do you want to learn how to work on your ATV? Do you want to buy new? What kind of money are you looking to spend?

I would say the 400ex. The newer ones have reverse, so you will be good in that area, and they are EASY to work on. Being air-cooled makes things pretty easy to work on internal wise, and everything is just straight forward. just my $.02

Any of these are great beginner quads, no need to get a 250ex or 300ex and get tired of it get a 400 easy to start on then fun to throw around and easy modifications to give it more power when necessary!

400ex imo would be best for u because im 16 5'7 and i weigh 145 and i ride a 2004 400ex! they're very reliable and when u get used to the power and how it runs u could get parts and start racing! its a great bike to start out with!

Yep. I would stay away from a 250ex and a 300ex, sure there good beginner quads, but after like 2 weeks of knowing how to ride it pretty good, its gonna get boring.
400ex, KFX400/Z400 is the way to go
