what do you want it for? just to ride on trails with slower bikes? then 400ex

do you mind replacing worn out parts more often? if not 250r

will you need to lug it around at low rpms? if so then 400ex

if you can go balls to the wall ALL of the time then get a 250r

i have ridden both and have 400ex...if it weren't for having to rebuild the r so much, i would buy my friends that will be for sale soon...the 2 feel the same since i have elka shocks and the gt thunder rear link...the only difference in the 2 is the power delivery...believe it or not we are about dead even through the first 4 and half gears, he starts getting me about mid throttle 5th and just blows by me once he gets into 6th...of course i weigh about 80 lbs less than him so i am sure that has something to do with us being so even, instead of him just blowing me away

as far as on the track...i could get him, but only because when we were on the track, it was only his second time riding the r...and neither of us had been on a track before...we were dead even until the next to last turn and i did an in and out on him to pass him

The 250r sits a lot lower and more comfortable. I know I'm gonna get flamed for this one, but a 250r can be slightly compared to a 300ex with how it sits, and how it handles. The 300ex geometly is similar to that of a 250r, but the R is a lot better. I can't stand how high the 400ex sits same with the 450r. I will be buying a 250r.

reliability- both are good if u maintain them, but 400ex is easier
stability... 250r
low end grunt... 400ex
easier to work on... 250r
lighter... 250r
gas mileage... 400ex
electric start... 400ex
easier to ride... 400ex
funner to ride... 250r

i am just wondering how much work it is to rebuild the motor if i try and do it myself and how much cdn it would be... cause i am gonna buy an 88 250r for 1500cdn and it needs a case on the left side of the motor and thats all i could find.. its mostly stock.... but if i do get it it would be for pit riding dunes and trails(pipeline and stuff) i run a 300ex right now and it just doesnt have enough for me nemore and a 400 is too expensive and i figure if i go with the r and fix it up over the years and rebuild it every winter it will be good to go for me..... as speedyquad said i am gonna be going balls to the wall ALL of the time as usual...

I'm goin to add that a 400ex is rather uncomfortable. it sits way to high, and feels cramped. I like how low and sleek my R sits. Handles a lot better and can rail turns better. 400's seem to lean/roll off to the side more since you can get as low on it. but if you can find a nice 400, go for it. but if you find a nice R, I'd jump all over it.
