I was looking for some advice out there. I have an 04 400ex and my clutch is just a pain to pull. I have an easy pull lever and still its just harder than it should be. I have the cable at its limit as far as getting the pull out of it. If I try to get some ease out of it at the lever then my quad does not shift right. I'm sure it has to be in the basket but I have never pulled apart the motor on it at all yet. I have the honda service manuel so I would at least know what I would be getting into I am just hoping for some advice for now. Thanks.

Before you do anything else put a new cable on it. Your old one could be dirty and stretched causing the hard pull. If that doesn't change anything then crack open the sidecase and see what's going on in there.

thanks. Do you know what could cause that on the inside if the cable doesn't do it.

Like you thought, a worn basket that has been grooved from the clutch plates chattering against it over time can also cause a rough clutch pull. Worn plates can also act similarly.

def cable....simple way to test.....take the cable off from the clutch perch..take and hold it straight up in the air and spray wd 40 down the inside of the cable tube till you see wd 40 come out the other end of the cable...put it back on adjust it and see if it softens up....i know a 04 400ex shouldnt have clutch problems already....im on stock clutches still in my 02...i thought i had the same problem with the clutch being messed up....shot some wd 40 down the cable.....put it back on and worked like a charm

had the same problem it was dirty cable. cleaned and lubed works good now. replacing soon with a Magura Hydraulic Clutch. lots easyer to pull and no adjusting needed.

Although that may help, that wont solve the problem if its worn basket.
