300ex or 400ex for first MX?

I plan on racing my first MX tonight and I have a question for the group. I have ridden for years but never in an MX so I don't really know what to expect. There are a lot more quads in the 400 class so I am thinking I might do better my first time in the 300 class. The problem is I have never really ridden my 300 (it is for the gf) hard. So should I race the 400 class and risk being run over but be on my own bike that I am very familiar with; or should I race the 300 class on a less familiar bike but with much less chance of getting run over? All advice is appreciated.

Just the man I was hoping to hear from. :) The problem is that this is a dirtbike happy area and so they run all of the 400s in the same class. Heck the 250rs and Banshees run at the same time as the 400 class except with a ¼ track lead. Should I just lag back on the start and run my own race or has your opinion changed to thinking that I should run the 300?
