Ok, alot of you know my constant arguing about the 86-87 frame not being as strong as a 88-89.

I think we all want to know the truth. all i need is pictures of the frames GOOD PICS. I will be able to show the differences and reasons.

I need the following pics for 86,87, 88 and 89
preferably NON GUSSETED FRAMES and bare frames would help as well. as in no parts on them

I need the following pics.

front
front left
front right
left side
right side
right rear
left rear
rear
upside down front
upside down rear

I need the pictures to be as close as possible without cutting the frame off at all.

once we get almost all the pics I will use adobe to show the differences. we can even make the thread I post as a sticky so if anyone wants to know the differences they will see.

picture of the areas that are different form year to year would be good to, like the front motor mounts
front shock area, rear motr mount area etc...

the more pics i get the better.

please post the year of your frame thanks...

Oh its alright, I know the feeling I was in a rollover accident a couple weeks ago and screwed up my rotator cuff in my shoulder bad and my leg, I know the feeling of being drugged up on pills. And being bored off of your *** not working! The worse thing is not even being able to ride or do something productive around the house due to being a gimp.:p

89 This is the fourth 89 frame I just picked up. sanded it down so you could see the cracks. also had a hairline in the top motor mount and a lower motor mount broke off.

damn i guess that frame was whopped on huh?

any chance you can get me some pics kind of like toms pics?

i cant make much of your out bro, i do appreciate you helpin this out though. by the way i see you have some gussets on your frame. i think this pic will help you gusset it even more.

remember gusseting in certain areas and not a complete gusset job will just move the stress to a different part of the frame, if you do a full gusset job correctly it will strngthen it.

Thanks but I already have copied and custom made gussets from those pics. I'm going over to my friends tommorrow where I do all of my 250r work. I'll take some like toms for you. their were just 2 gussets 1 by the roller and the one on the steering. I think the steering one helped make the cracks in the frame. She's rough but she will look brand new when I'm done with her. Soon as my stupid mig welder shows up. Also cut the stock gussets off and I'm gonna try some custom one's, grinded all of the welds down to for the clean look. I figure what the heck if it does not hold up I got three more and a whole lot of time to mess with.

really thats good to hear, that pic is my old 88 frame. i also updated it with a bottom gusset which i think you should implement.

let me just give you a background on my testing. I gusseted my 88 frame and ran it hard for a season and a half, im talkin 60 foot doubles, cased a few. hitting whoops in 5th and 6th gear for about a mile ever day riding.

after a season and a half i got a crack by the rear triangle part of the frame, when i saw that. I added the last gusset, and the frame has been bulet proof since.(bottom right pic)

thanks I'll be cutting those out of some flat stock tommorow night.

p.s.

the two circles on the lower motor mount and where the bottom frame rail meets the main rail are circled because the welds were welded over to beef up the original weld.

also i see you edited your post.

if you grind down the welds to much theey will not have the strngth as a good clean weld will. so try not to grind to much.

I htink i used flat 1/8" stock might have been 1/4" you want the thinnest possible without the ability of flex in the stock.

for the top shock gussets use round OPEN tubes NOT solid tubes.

it takes some time to align them good and make them symetric but it will work, once you get the tubes shaped correctly, spot weld them on then continue.

p.s.

that front crack near the top frame rail looks like it was from bottoming the front out REALLY hard. thats the only way that could crack like that

I have round open and square open also, which do you think is better? right now their all cut from round open. I'll stop cluttering your post now to, thanks for the info. Also for the lower mount I double up the thickness on them. What do you think the top motor mount is from? I'm kinda clueless on that one.
The frame looks about as true as they come, no dents either

ddont worry about cluttering the post bro. this is just preliminary

im gonna make a compilation once i get GOOD pics of all year frames. MY 86 and 88 pics are not good angles and i cant really use them, if i get your 89 pics i may go ahead and try to make the thread.

the top motor mount? you mean the head stay? they always crack. i beefed up my old head stay by laying new welds over the old ones but it still cracked. if you can find one, try looking for a LAEGER head stay, they are chromoly and stopped cracking up there all together

use round for the front shock area

weird my trx250r frame cracked in 4 places, but the headstay didn't and when the bottom and front mounts broke the headstay and swingarm were the onlyones holding the motor in.

Beerock - My friend hasn't started building the project with my old '86 frame so I'll try to get you some pics tomorrow. It only has gussets on the subframe.

i hate to tell you but your gusset where the rear master cylinder bolts to might have some problems. you will probably have to grind the top of your gusset to allow the master cylinder to bolt up.

A notch was added to the gusset for the master cylinder. I'll post pics of the frame tomorrow.

this is an 89 frame, I circled all of the places that I had cracks. The one at the rear motor mount was where the longer tab was welded onto the cross brace.
