I'm an eBay retard and have a question

I've only purchased one thing in my life from Ebay and it was a "Buy it Now" item. I just bid on something this evening and am confused. I used that Ebay auto bid thing. The highest bid on the item was $15.49 and I set my max bid amount at $35. I hit the continue button and it tells me I'm the current high bidder at $23.50 and I'm only the 2nd bidder! Why would this auto-bid program bid $8??

Because the other bidder, also used the auto bid, and his max bid was $23.00

The other bidder must have had a maximum bid of say $22.00.So since you bid $35.00 the auto bid only bids enough to keep you the high bidder until you reach your maximum bid.I hope this makes sense.

guy, that means that the other bidder's maximum bid was higher than his first bid but it will only show the amount of the initial starting price.
for example, i am selling an item and set the starting price at $10. you bid on it with a max bid of $35. it will stay at the starting price of $10 until someone else bids higher. if no one else bids on it, you win the item for $10. if someone else enters a max bid of $20 the price of the item will then jump to $20 but you will still be the high bidder because your max bid is $35. if another person enters a max bid of $23, the price will then go to $23 an so on. as long as no one bids higher than $35, you will win the auction. the ending price will be as high as what you and someone else was willing to pay for it.

I guess what threw me off was that I was only the second bidder and instantly it was $23.50.
