I think i've pushed my luck long enough using the ball on the bumper and it's time to get a receiver hitch. What do I need to look for?

It's for a '94 Dakota Sport w/3.9 V6. The usual trailer is a 6X8 flatbed/utility with what I think is a 2200# axle. I may want to pull a larger trailer in the future.

I know U-haul centers install lots of reciever hitches, you might start there for an installed price, and make more decisions based on what you learn from there.

Get at least a class 3 hitch.

I think class III is the minimum for a 2" receiver. 2" is the most common size used, hell my brother and I both have a 2" receivers on our rangers and wouldn't have it any other way. I would go to a Uhaul center or truck accesory shop and have it installed. It's not hard to do but usually you end up toasting a few bits and or a drill.

Reese , drawtite, or hidden hitch are all good brands, my friend owns a local custom shop that installs them. All three of those brands also use existing holes in your frame so there should not be any drilling or cutting required anywhere. Pretty easy installation. Whichever one u decide to go with just double check that no drilling holes in your frame is required, and if it is I would go with a different brand !

I'd get a class 3 but if your pullin a small trailer with a dakota you could run a 2 and prolly a 1 if you just got a quad and some other small stuff.

We got a 3 and pull a big trailer with it.

Class 3 is the first class to bolt to the frame, it helps with 2 people doin it, you might need to drill wholes as well.

Class 3,4, and 5 are for serious use.

For a dakota pullin a quad you can just use a 2.

I think I have a reciever for that truck, if you want it, might require some drilling to install my dad had it on his 87 and has been sitting in the garage since. If I remeber right it hangs down a little lower than I would think it should.

I really like the Hidden hitch brand recievers as they tend to be aa little more tucked up I bought my last one from etrailer.com the best prices I found

Well, duh. Of COURSE he's going to go class III or above. If he wanted to go with something wimpy, he could just use the existing ball on his bumper.

Go for the class III or higher Hidden hitch. I have one on my colorado and it tucks nicely under the rear and seems very well built. I didn't have to do any drilling but your truck could be different.

i love my reese, and i havent known anybody to have any problems with them in the past. for newer model trucks, many of the hitches are completely bolt on, but you may want to call the companies and see if they make one that is bolt on. its a pain in the arse to drill through the frame...:ermm:

The best online deal i've found so far is a Reese class III/IV for $149.21 including shipping. It's suppposed to be a bolt on for my application. I'm going to look around some more though.

Thanks for the info:)

What year is your Dakota and did you need to drill the frame to mount it?

01 dakota, no need to drill holes because it uses existing holes.
