Basically what I am asking, is a V6 Explorer 4x4 XLT a decent car to own? Anyone own one? Know of any common problems? Gas mileage? Any other comments?

Thanks guys!

They don't call them exploders for nothing. Honestly man I think you would be well suited getting something different. Go to consumer reports and look up ford explorer and see what others are saying. Actually doing a search on the interent of "problems with ford explorers" will bring up plenty of info.

Try a cherokee, grand cherokee, or wrangler!

The 2002 explorers are not bad at all. You will get about 16mpg around town. They had some problems with the shift solenoid going bad but that would usually happen around 30,000 miles. What it would do is have a delay going into reverse and then it bang into gear. I have a 2004 with the v8 and I love it. The price is pretty good to.

Just a reminder, the gas mileage is not great.

I don't know about recent years, but I know the mid-90s had terrible problems with the automatic transmissions.

I used to own a 93, thankfully mine was a manual. I got on a Explorer Forum, and talked to people that had replaced their automatic transmissions three or four times!

I have a 99 and it has 120,000 on it and is still running pretty well, considering I am pretty hard on vehicles. It is the V6 and gets about 15mpg. For as much abuse as it as been put through with little problems it is surprising.

We have a '93 Explorer 4x4, auto trans. To put it simple, 160,000 miles later, we've only had to replace the radiator and all new hoses. Oh yeah, it's a tank.

The 02 should be find, my mom has one now and its holding up fine. Only thing was I've seen that the rear shocks seem to start leaking really early, like at 5000 miles the rear shocks blew out. If that one has 50,000 then I'm guessing they've already been replaced. Her last one which was a 97 wasn't great. The tranny started slipping at around 70,000 and the rear end was replaced at around 60,000. Also the 4x4 engaged pretty hard on those, but the new one seems to be much smoother and a comfortable ride. That should definitely last for a couple of years. And as far as checking consumer reports, the explorer was not mentioned at all for worst used vehicles to buy. The s-10's and blazers did fall into that category however.

Explorers are nice vehicles

You'll get around 20mpg average, prolly better with a 6-cyl

We have a 97 with a 5.0 and its a great car, had it since 96 so thats wut 34 years?

My aunt has a new one and its great, just like the one you want.

Good milage, hauling, good for everything.

And I new it was a 2002 cuz I know how to read a VIN:rolleyes:

If you want to know recalls or problems with them let me know, I have the password to get into Fords website and look up everything, cuz thats wut I went to school for:D

We have a 2002 just like that one and its been nothing but GREAT for us. We've drove it, all the way to southern tennessee a few times. It drives excellent and it gets down for a 4.0 V6!

it now has 63,000 miles and going strong!
