they sell kits to do that, but id suggest just trying to run it with out the lid. It will have the same effect and be free.

no because it is opened up all of the way with the lid off, there is no restriction what so ever.

I don't know about the 400EX, but I know on the 250r, you'll actually LOSE power by eliminating the boot between the airbox and carb. It helps streamline the incoming air.

Removing it and attaching the filter directly to the carb allows too much turbulence at the mouth of the carb, and it doesn't mix the fuel as well. You'll lose 2-5hp.

I konw of a couple people that did this and had no probs jetted perfect. But they only ride tracks and if the track is all wet and muddy i wouldnt want that. Im prolly gonna get the kit over the winter for my 400 to do that.

Eliminating the airbox and intake on a 400ex helps power. The intake tube has too many bends to get good airflow.

Very true you don't want a clamp on filter at the carb, it creates air turbulance dyno can/will prove it as a lose of power but better then restricted airbox. Take the same filter and put it aobut 8 inches further back at the end of a nice smooth intake tube and youve added even more power. The long tube allows the air to enter the engine at higher speeds without all the turbulence.

I have one of these on my ex and I'm very happy with it. I did sacrifice my airbox and plastic tie it to the frame to help keep water out on the unexpected pond entries.

I done mine similar to yours^^^...

I havent ran an airbox for the last 2.5 years on my quad :) I put mine of the end of my intake boot not direct to carb.

I now will be running a aluminum box mainly because I wanted to relocate the battery. Ill be curious how much of a difference it will have with it vs. w/o it(wont have a lid) ...
