Since it was my first year weight lifting and I am a senior in high school i was just seeing how much everyone lifts. Post your weight and height and how much you can bench, dead lift, squat and power clean. Im thinking about joining wrestling this year cause the coach wants me too. It would be my first year in wrestling. Please dont make this into a competition thing, im just curious on what other people can do. No Flaming.
Through first 6 weeks through school and lifting weights:
Bench=185
Squat=265
Power Clean (over head)=135
Dead Lift=375
6'3" 195
24.4% body fat at beginning of year.
I wish I would have started earlier in high school so I could be one ripped guy right now. But instead I decided to work and not be in any sports.

I haven't seen very many people that don't. Unless you have some really fat kids or really weak kids at you're school or a combonation of those 2 it's not a hard thing to do.

That's what I was thinking.....squat is usually a more dominant weight lifting exercise.:ermm:

****, i meant squat more than you bench. Yeah, if you cant squat more than you weigh give up weightlifting. No, usually you can squat a ton more than you bench (bigger leg muscles compared to arm muscles) but i have a bad back (broke it in 2 spots actually) so i never pressed myself in squatting.

wilkin250r
10-31-2005, 03:20 PM
Odd. Without any medical conditions, you should easily be able to squat more than you bench, usually almost twice as much.

I was big on squats back in high school. I only benched about 210, but I could squat 450.

Not bad for a 150lb weakling back then.

Of course, now I weigh in around 230, and bench around 170 :ermm:

A "squat" is just like it sounds. You put the weight on your shoulders, and squat. You keep your back straight up, and bend at the knees until you're almost in a sitting position, and then lift back up. Basically, lifting weights with your legs.

A "clean" is lifting something off the floor up to your chest, just below your chin.

A "clean and jerk" starts off the same as a clean, but then you lift the weight over your head, arms extended and elbows locked. :muscle:

There is a little more technique involved, like the difference between a snatch, a clean and jerk, or a clean and lift. But you get the basic idea.

cleans are bad for your wrists. most weight trainers are trying to get people to switch tow "power cleans" which is just one motion. It takes a little more effort and energy for a power clean but if you play football or basketball or even baseball its probably the best work out you can do.

No offense, but there is no way you benched 285 as an eighth grader. You just dont have the technique, nor the amount of time to build up to that much weight.

A lot of people love to put up huge numbers on bench, and the best routine i have done to pump up fast is the Shawn Phillips bensh routine. It is a 50lbs in 50 days routine, and it works great It is not just bench, but a whole workout. I like it because the workout are short, and you feel like you aren't doing enough, but man does it work.

I plan on trying to get the school record for my weight class at dead lifting. (510) I havent maxed out for 7 weeks now. I find it wierd how people have been lifting weights their whole high school life but yet I can lift more than them and this is my 6 weeks of the class. But I suppose other people excel at other things than others. Is it some sort of genetic thing or?

It all depends on what your lifting weights for. For example, my second hobby to racing quads is swimming. You can't be all big and bulky if you want to be fast in the water. So, I do 4 sets of a minimum 10 reps for my bench ruitine. I'll vary the weight from about 160-180 depending on how I feel. And I weigh about 185 and i'm 6 foot 4. Same goes for racing quads, you can't be all huge if you want to last a 20 lap moto, it just doesn't happen.

Actually I started lifting in 6th grade, and am just naturally strong. I benched 255 as a 7th grader. 285 is a ton for an 8th grader, I know, but I did it.

So You are saying you squat 450 freeweight or are you using machine. I don't do alot of weight for squats because it bothers my lower back. I squat 315 for reps of 6 to 8. I have never maxed out squats but I know I could never do 450 freeweight.

wilkin250r
11-01-2005, 04:26 PM
It was freeweight. Now, keep in mind this was 11 years ago, in a small school. If 450 sounds absurd, we may have had a different technique.

We had a squat rack, and the weight sat about 5ft up on the rack. We lift the weight onto our shoulders, and squat down until your upper legs are parallel with the floor, and back up.

Honestly, I bet it took me a full 7 seconds to get back up. I almost didn't make it.

In our whole school, only 4 people could beat me in squats, and they were our offensive line, all weighed well over 200 lbs.

450 is a ton, but it wouldnt be impossible even for a small guy.

On average 350 is a pretty respectable number so if you work real hard at it another 100 pounds is workable.

I saw a 250 lb guy do just over 600 pounds. do you know what 605 pounds does to a bar rated at 500? It bends it.

our running back weights just a little under 160 and squatted 450 as a junior. It's pretty impressive how much working out 5 days a week will turn a little weak kid into an unstoppable running machine.

just dont overwork yourself. Do a decent amount of reps with a decent amount of weight a couple days a week. You want to give your muscle about 48 hours of rest time between work outs. Fro example, you did bench today so wait 48 hours to do bench again. Try to lift correctly too, just because you are doing a lot of weight doesnt mean you'll get better, you need to get form down. A lot of guys i see in the weight room are doing curls and bending their back to get those last few in, well it doesnt help you improve at all. So just do the weight you can do and do it right. 5 weeks of working out and you will see dramatic improvement if you are really working.

Some leg press machines like the one at our school it has different notches, 6 of them like starting out in a "dunked" or Bottom out position. then you can move up to the point where you start out with like a 160 degree with your legs etc. which makes it ALOT easier. also cheating.

Back when I was in decent shape at about 235lbs, 6'1".
-Bench 305
-squat 475
-deadlift 450 (could have done more, but started getting a hernia from deadlifts)
-legpress 1000+

I've got big legs, so when I got a truly good leg workout I'd sometimes get sick after, even though my legs could do more.
Gumby syndrome I guess.

Had a pretty fun day of weight lifting. After doing my 3 sets of 10 at 225 for deadlift, we cheered on this dude that was maxing out. Once he was able to that we would chant add more weight! Couple weeks back I fell when I was playing volleyball (yes yes I know, I tripped on the ball cause I tried to kick it) and I fell and face planted and landed on my hip really bad. Well the pain didnt go away for a couple of days and now theres a pain in my tailbone and the side of my hip and I dont think I have fell recently. So hopefully still lifting, isnt screwing me up. I do get alot of physical activity a day. Weight lift at school for 45 mins during 6th hour, then I go down to the track and run for 2 miles during 8th hour, and then I go work at the grocey store. And if im not totally pooped after that, me and a couple of my friends will go to the local gym and lift some more. I wish I was this ambitious during my high school life rather than just my senior year of it.

I agree, this is the best bench press workout ever. I used the same routine back in the late 80's. Builds great size and strength.
I am glad you posted these links. I had the routine scribbled down on a piece of paper that I kept in my gym bag and have since lost it. I am getting ready to start back with the weight training with my son and it will come in handy.

The school record for squat at my school is 525 set by a 230 lb freak of a running back on our only football team to ever qualify for state and that was free weight also I got 485 and weighed 175. I tried for 500 3 times my last day of my sr year and just barely missed it each time.

I am glad to see someone else has tried it. It is an amazing routine. Anyone starting out, anyone who has hit a plateau, or anyone who wants to mix up there routine should try this. It is a super simple routine, and everything is layed out for you, includung what weight to use.

Also, 600lbs isn't undoable at his size, but a lot of that was probably the leg rack. There is a ton of difference between one machine and the next. I remember in highschool we had a universal machine, and just about everyone could do the 500lbs setting. Some one these guys were wimpy as hell, the machine was just off. I do 1000+ usually. I love leg press because my knees hate squats, but presses don't hurt them. I have no idea what my max would be, but it would be up there.

reps are the amount of "times" you do a certain exversize in one set. for example, if you are doing a 3x5 bench work out you would do a certain amount of weight 5 times (5 reps) rest possibly stretch, then do it again, rest and stretch, add a little weight if you can and do your 5 reps for the final day, stay away from bench for about 48 hours or more if you need to and try it again but add a little weight. Even 5 pounds makes a difference

Curles is that excersize you see all the muscle heads trying to do. Really curls do nothing but make your bicept big. You need to keep your back straight, take the weight and do exactly what the lift sounds like. curl it up to your chest using no momentum. Curls are def something you'll want to do to impress the ladies though, but if you dont have a chest or tricepts to back back it up you dont have nothin.

I would recomend going into your high school weight room after school (if you have one) and talking to a football coach or someone that looks like an experienced lifter to help you get technique on certain lifts down. And if your high school provides a weight lifting class take it, you will see massive improvement especially at 14. I wouldnt go to hard lifting at 14 though. Wait until you are about 15 to really get into lifting. Just lift what you can for now, even messing around in your basement with home gym stuff will get you bigger, as long as you are doing it right.

Hondaexboy.. Protein. You will need 1.5 grams of protein per body pound of weight. I eat 18 raw egg whites a day. Plus other supplements..

Take vanadyl sulfate, it acts like insuline and keeps the blood in the target area longer.
Lecithin. its a fat emulsifier. works really well.
Dont forget your amino acids.
Dandelion works well for water loss.
Creatine.

But being 14 dont push it too much, your body is still growing naturally.

Hey i cant really remember what i used to beable to do because i got out of my weight lifting class but now im wanting to get back to lifting. I dont care about looking tuff i just wanna be strong. One of my good friends recommended buying a bowflex because he said you can do everything with them but what is your guys opinion on them? Do you guys know of anything better for just at home workouts?
