well i have had my 300ex for a year and was wanting something with more power and suspension. i was looking for a 400ex, but i found a deal on a 450r and figured at least i wouldnt be dissapointed with power this time. well i was too right. its scary power over my 05 300ex. gonna take it out to the trails tomm and see if i can keep it in 1 piece. wish me luck. lol

i went from a 300 to a 450 too, big difference. be careful on the trails they can get away form you easy.

Yea, I have a 330ex, and I have a lot of seat time on my friends 450r's. You get used to it pretty quick. It was a shocker at first, but after 10 or so minutes on it, I was used to it. They need some work to truely be fast. Sparks big core pipe, MX grind cam, twin air filter, remove the airbox lid, 13.1 comp piston, and port and polish. Then they can get scary, lol. I want to get my hands on a modded 250r, and see how it feels before I just go out and buy a 450.

i went from an old 250x(same as 300ex) to a MX/GNCC race ready big bore, stroker, MX ported, Long travel 290R with many engine mods, and tons of power, and it was a huge difference to get over. before i ever rode my R i got on a 450r, and that wasn't too hard to get used to. my 290r was harder to get used to comin off a 450r, than gettin used to a 450r after comin off a 250x. the 450r has a very useable powerband, and its not overly powerful. my 290r is overly powerful though(at least in the woods).

well i went trail riding with it today and it is a bit of a handful. seems too fast for trails. ran in 1st gear most of the day. i think i am going to try and drop sprocket teeth to help slow it down. as it sits now there is no way i could ride with my sons 50. the thing cant put along.
and coming up out of a canyon it did get away from me. lol
got to the top and caught traction....shot out from under me like a bullet. left me landing flat on my bach. tailbone is killing me. lol it was funny once the stars cleared

get a CR250 front sprocket. Gears it down one tooth................much better trail machine that way. Trust me.

when i first got my 400, the closest i had ever rode was a 300ex, and it was a few years back, so i would hardly ever get on my 400 hard cuz i wasnt used to the power, i thought it was a beast lol. Im used to it now, and ive already put a cam in it, and a piston might be comin soon

First time I rode my shee, never riding a shee before its a 409 motor etc, I nearly shat my self, way to fast lol Its still too fast :o

cr250 front eh, how many teeth does it drop?
the 450r just accelerates and revs soooo much faster than the ex's do its flat out power on before you can blink an eye

1 tooth drop from stock. It will allow you to use first for grunt work & use second for trails without alot of shifting or clutch work. It also makes it an awesome drag race set up for second gear starts.

when my step dad got his yfz when i rode it it felt like a huuuge power difference.. still does everytime i ride it so i know goin to a r from a 300 has gotta feel crazy fast. and goin from a cr 80 to a r has got to be like night and day.

then most likely you will be too lazy to change the sprocket..............but, I believ it is 14T stock. I sold my R quite some time ago, so don't hold me to it.

Why wouldn't you jsut get a 13T sprocket for the 450R?

I think thats what I was telling him to do.

when I bought my 13T sprocket back in Feb of 04 there was no 13T sprocket listed for the R. So I had to buy a cr-250 sprocket. For that matter, the Honda dealer had no parts listing at all for anything for the 450R in Feb of 04.

I rode a 450 with a 13 tooth, and I wanted to fall asleep on it. It felt soooo sissy to me compared to one with a 14 tooth. The 06's have 13's stock. If I ever get one I will definetly put on a 14. Its kind of sad that people can't handle the 14.

yeah.....you are so much cooler than us pussies who prefer a rideable bike. I have handled everything I have ever ridden and I am sure my list is longer than yours. Your criticism adds no value to this thread. And...I might add, this VALUABLE information is coming from a guy who rides a 300EX.

I can definetly tell you have ridden more quads than me, but more "rideable" is ones own opinion I guess. With the 14, you get more power to the ground, and longer gears so you arent shifting constantly. The 13 had a little more snap to it like when you first just cracked the gas, but after that it had no pull. There was alot of wheelspin too, which I didnt like too much. I just think that on the MX track 2 bone stock 450's with equal riders, except 1 quad has a 13 and the other a 14, the one with the 14 is going to win because youre spinning less and shifting less. Basically my advice to the kid is give it some time before you go to a 13 tooth. You will learn to ride it easlily with the 14, it just takes more skill and it will make you a better rider.

actually i am old enough to be most members dads.
and you obviously didnt read the whole post. i am trail riding and riding with my son on his 50. no mx track, no drag racing. i agree with the 14t it pulls way better, but thats not what i am looking for

No, I didnt read the whole thing, lol. I just kinda guessed 300ex to a 450r would be a kid my age or younger. Well then yea i guess I would put a 13 if I was riding slowly with my kid on his 50.

wrong........the better rider will win in all cases. Riding whats more usable power and makes the rider more comfortable will instill confidence and riding skill. Getting used to odd gearing is useless. Also, the taller gearing requires more shifting,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the lower gearing allows you to use the middle gears more effectively.
