well my buddy bought a 400ex and its pretty tight. 2 weeks into it the shift shaft on it broke. but only the tip of it and aparently this is not a freek thing just wondering if its happened to anyone else? Not to mention local honda dealership estimated repair costs to be $650. Thats B.S
My friend had the same thing happen. It's a case splitter to replace so $650 is intirely possible. You need to pull the engine, top end and cylinder to split the cases.

same thing happened to me....i planned on replacing it before i decied to part out my EX so i had it welded on by a top notch welded and it held up for 4 months
Mine broke half way up Thunder Mountain dune at St. Anthony's last summer:(
Replaced it myself, splitting the cases wasn't as difficult as it sounded.

go for the weld job, if it holds up GREAT ! If not it didn't hurt anything to try it . I know several people that had this happen and are running the welded shifty lever, and is working fine.

I welded mine a few months ago and its still running.
I say weld it, not gonna cost you anything to try it. Still have to replace the same parts if you have to split the cases later.
