i picked up an 04 450r and am looking for a k&n and all i can seem to find is one that has a new velocity stack. which do i need to fit the stock air box? i will probably run it open anyway(with outerwears of course), but like the partial protection of the airbox

Use K&N part #HA-4504 . It is a direct replacement filter that has a bracket attached like the stock one does.

Save your engine and get a foam filter instead..

k&Ns tend to suck dirt. The extra hp gain is so minimal with the K&N it isn't worth sucking dirt..

i havent had a problem with my k&n's at all. i had one in my 400ex and now in my 450R. both with wraps of coarse. it really depends on the riding you do. i dont race and mostly ride sand in the summer months and hard packed (which is pretty damn dusty) in the winter spring months. i clean mine often and they are so much nicer to clean vs. foam. no problems yet *knock on wood*
