remove the draining bolt on the bottom of the engine... then drain the oil.. after youre done put the bolt back on then, fill it up with oil and youre good to go.. dont fill it up too much or too little.

After I drain as much as I can, I kick it over a few times easily to get every last drop out...

you forgot to mention that you have to change the filter also, no sense in putting new oil but still have a dirty filter.

Put bike in gear, stand on rear grab bar, smash case will ball peen hammer and release the oil from the case..... or you could just unbolt the drain plug from the bottom and change the filer......

Is everyone forgetting to change your clutch side oil too. It is good to change that when you change your engine oil. I do it everytime i change my oil, keeps the tranny runnin smooth.

yeah especially since there is no oil filter in the transmission side!!!

Using the Honda gear lube I feel it doesn't break down as quickly as oil so I change it every few rides. I change the engine oil after every ride. I need to buy a reusable filter since the oil is expensive enough per oil change.

How does the tranny side get changed, just the same with the bolt on bottom and a side window? Never looked real close at the transmission side...

No window just a bolt, its behind your foot brake lever. Just take that out let it drain and then plug it up and then fill it up with i think half a quart or somethin.

1. WARM UP ENGINE
2. PULL FILLER CAP ON LEFT SIDE
3. REMOVE ENGINE OIL DRAIN BOLT DIRECTLY UNDER MOTOR
4. VERY SLOWLY PUSH DOWN ON KICK PEDAL A NUMBER OF TIMES TO RELEASE ANY ADDITIONAL TRAPPED OIL.
5. REMOVE OIL FILTER COVER JUST IN FRONT OF OIL FILLER CAP ON LEFT SIDE, IT HAS TWO BOLTS
6. PUT YOUR DRAIN BOLT BACK IN WITH GOOD WASHER
7. INSTALL SPRING IN NEW OIL FILTER AND INSTALL WITH "OUTSIDE" MARK ON FILTER FACING OUT
8. PUT THE OIL FILTER COVER BACK AND TIGHTEN THE BOLTS (ONLY ABOUT 7 FT LBS OF TORQUE OR IN OTHER WORDS VERY GENTLE)
9. PUT NEW ENGINE OIL IN (LEFT SIDE, HONDA WOULD RECOMMEND 10W40 WITH MOLY IN SILVER BOTTLE) .87 US QTS
10. INSTALL ENGINE OIL FILLER CAP (LEFT SIDE)
10. REMOVE TRANNY OIL FILLER CAP (RIGHT SIDE)
11. REMOVE TRANNY DRAIN BOLT AND DRAIN OIL (NEAR RIGHT HAND FOOT PEG AND BELOW FOOT BRAKE PEDAL)
12. REMOVE THE SMALL PHILLIPS HEAD OIL CHECK BOLT DOWN BELOW THE OIL FILLER CAP (right side)
13. INSTALL TRANNY DRAIN BOLT WITH GOOD WASHER
14. FILL TRANNY WITH .58 US QTS OF OIL (HONDAS OIL IS HP TRANS OIL)
15. A SMALL AMOUNT OF OIL WILL FLOW OUT OF THE OIL CHECK BOLT HOLE
16. IF NOT, SLOWLY ADD ADDITIONAL OIL UNTIL IT FLOWS OUT THE HOLE.
17. INSTALL THE OIL CHECK BOLT
18. INSTALL OIL FILLER CAP
19. RIDE THE PISS OUT OF IT
20. HOPE THIS HELPS;)

We can go on and on about which oil to use and what brand, but I am just telling you what Honda recommends. If you want a sure thing then what I suggested will do you. Many other oils will do as good or better but be careful what you put in your tranny. Oils that contain Moly and some synthetic oils will likely make you clutch slip. I would suggest buying a service manual also, you can learn alot from it and it's good to have when you go to sell it.

man, you use engine oil on the gear shift side, that was the oil you drained out the bottom. Dont forget a new filter, i use K&N. Also before you put the plug back, kcik it slow a bit to get all the oil out, Also after you have put it all back together, start it and let it run a minute, then check you oil levels, add if needed. just make sure you have a small gap in the oil window. Your tranny oil is what you drained the gold bolt on the brake side. Just fill that one up with 650 cmcubed of transoil.

Peace

the brake lever side. that uses 650 cm Cubed of TransOil. So you just measure that side.

idk about kicking the engine over with no oil in the engine but I blow on the hole with the drain plug out and it usually gets the rest out

Anyone who fills the trans side like this is a absolute moron !!

Drain it and fill it with 650 cc of oil.. That means you will have 300 cc left over in a quart bottle ..!

LEAVE THE CHECK BOLT ALONE !!

wow thats a little harse. if you are worried about getting the right amount of oil in either side do yourself and your wallet a favor and pic up a factory fill bottle. its 21 bucks and worry free. they have markings for oil and filter change, just an oil change (no filter, which i dont know why anyone would want to do that), and a mark for the trans side.

All right, sorry about the moron word..

First of all the bolt is a check oil bolt,it is there to check if there is any oil in the engine. Eample : Say you leave your machine at the cabin or in storage for a period of time and want to go ride without a full service first. This is when the check bolt could be used..

Second, the oil will come out of the check hole before the proper amount of oil is put in, leaving your engine low on oil and may cause damage.

Third ,this bolt is very small and very easy to strip or break. I say leave it be, except in the first senerio which won't happen very often if ever!

Forth, Do it how ever you feel fit.. It is your machine and your money will fix it !

Am I reading this right that in the owner's manual it states that you can use Pro Honda GN4 or HP4 4-Stroke oil for the engine and tranny ? Is this true, but even so doesn't a gear oil work better for the tranny ?

I change mine evertime I change engine oil (HP4). Cheap insurance. I may try the HP4-M on the engine side next time.

I too am a moron. I use the check bolt to check the tranny oil level.

I also use the check bolt to check my tranny side. I only ride on the weekends, so before I ride I check the oil. Seemed like common sense to me. I got the idea from the dealership. I believe they might know a little of what they're talking about. They're not very bright, but they do know how to check oil.

Can you use engine oil for the tranny, i think it says something like that in the manual?

Absolutely not. I use HP4 in the motor and Honda Pro tranny oil in the the transmission.

The manual says to use HP-4 for both the engine and tranny. So what gives ?

My 2004-2006 HONDA Service manual says NOTHING, Nada about using Honda tranny oil. Only HP4 or GN4 (or equiv.) Although (I think) my owner's man w/bike says you can use Honda tranny oil, OR motor oil. I use the HP4-M (w/moly) motor side, HP4 (no moly) tranny side

Dave400ex
07-17-2006, 05:29 PM
You are correct, the Owner's manual says you can use the Pro Honda HP Trans Oil, but the Service manual doesn't say it. I went and bought the Trans oil after reading everybody else likes it.
