hey, im gonna buy my cuzins '05 trx450R, but his girlfriend sank it in salt water. i'm pritty sure there is sand in the cylender. i was thinking that if i buy it, take the engine out, hone the cylender and buy a rebuild kit it will be as good as new, would this be a good idea??? your respones would be very helpfull....:)

i was gonna take it to my school, cause we have an engine overhaul class, and i was gonna stick it in a sulivin tank and that will flush all the sand and salt water outa it. but i think that it needs a rebuild kit too.

You can't just hone the cylinder, it is a plated cylinder and it has to be replated if you remove the plating with a hone.

You'll need a service manual and a torque wrench to start. Don't hone the cylinder. If it's bad, a new one is $199 Just clean carb good and rering piston. Buy new Honda gaskets. Buy some cheap oil and a couple of filters. Change the oil and let it run 5 minutes and change it. Same with tranny oil. Run it 15 minutes and change oil and filter and tranny oil again. Clean air filter too. Make sure to torque everything correctly upon reassembly. Should be good to go.:)
