If my dad got a durablue axle for his 400ex that was wider than stock, would it make it handle better since it will be a lot wider in the back than in the front? Or would it handle worse?

if he has extended a arms, that would be an great setup. with stock a arms, it will take a bit more effort to turn, but it will be more stable
