gotta know tonight, making the order for either one. let me know which would be the better stand alone mod? cant get both right now, has to be one or the other. ive heard a 416 without a new cam doesnt gain anything, and ive heard a new cam helps majorly on a stock engine, but yet i'd like the 416 for more grunt. whats your guys idea on this? thanks

I think I am a little late if you needed an answer earlier, sorry.

I recently did a 416 kit (JE piston with a 10.8 to 1 compression ratio). I have a stock exhaust, K&N filter, and rejeted the carb. Kept the stock cam in there. Wow, I noticed an impressive difference just going to the higher compression!!!

From my experience, I would recommend the higher compression piston (416 kit). Then, once you get a cam, it will be an easy installation later on.

I ordered the Hot Cam stage 2 cam from C&D Racing..... Great people to do business with. Anyway, I wonder if I am ready for any more speed out of my 400:D  :macho

Good luck!

why did you go with the 10:8:1 compression? I am going to do the stage 2 cam (hotcam) with an 11:1 piston. Do you think the 10:8:1 is better for the 400ex? any help would be great

If you go with the 11 you will have to run race gas, if you go with the 10.8 you can run without it, I went with the 10.8 and have been running 50/50, if I did it over again I would go with the 11.

I was told that as long as I stayed under 12:1 I could use pump gas 92 octane. CD racing told me that they 11:1 could be ran off pump.

I'm with Jhallett on this one. I'd go w/ 11 or maybe even 12. With my 10.8 & the Sparks advance key, I have to run 50/50. Even then I get a little ping at the sand dunes (probably need to play a little more w/ jetting)

Back to the main topic, if I had to choose between the piston or the cam, I would go with the cam.

just my .02

The cheaper and less time consuming would definetly be the cam purchase and installation. I do not know first hand yet how much the cam will add (feel) to the performance, where I noticed an impressive gain just with the higher compression piston kit.

Wether this makes any sense, I opted to stay on the conservative side of the compression, 10.8 to 1, because I run pumped gas. I do a lot of trail riding, and never wanted to be stranded without race gas. I hear the "pre detenation" is a bad thing... So I decided to be on the safer side. (And I am very happy with the 10.8 to 1 compression):D

I too look for C&D Racing for advise, as well as on here!!!

Good luck!
