my 400ex is running finally. but the valves are tapping like crazy. if i adjust them tighter like they should be it wont run. but with them really lose it runs fine. any ideas?

This is a long shot; do a compression check with both settings. Sounds like compression release problems or worn rings which causes low compression causing it to start only when the valves are so loose that the compression release doesn't work at all.

Lobes up. The adjustment has to be done on the compression stroke not the exhaust. The rocker arms shouldn't have any play in them. Also do not turn the flywhell counterclockwise at all. It can mess with the decompression valve. Maybe that's why it ran funny after you adjusted the valves....:(

BornOnFire I might be reading something wrong, but there is supposed to be play in the rocker arms. And counter clockwise is the only direction you want to go in. Its clockwise the direction you don't want to move the flywheel in. Correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe you guys aren't talking about adjusting your valves.http://www.exriders.com/tech/valves.shtml
