Just installed the 450r shocks on the ex today. What a huge difference! Thank you all for your posts on this upgrade! I knew the factory shocks were crap, but now I am stoked. I ride mainly old log roads and fire roads. Some of which are severely washed out leaving nothing but rock and ledge. The old shocks is where most of the control and steering problems were from. Next investment is some decent front rubber. I'm happy as a foreman 450s in waste deep muck. Cheers!

get r shocks revalved and made for your riding style and weight and they'll be better. I got mine for 200shipped

where did u buy the r shocks, from the factory or where?

Anywhere from 200-300$. I got mine off e-bay for 285.00$. They are in mint condition and don't have a mark on them. They feel like new. I figured it's worth it considering that a new set of works shoks is 350-400$ and that's without external reservoirs, compression and rebound adjustment. Which the 450r shocks have. Bang for the buck, can't be beat. If you are doing a lot of trail riding, the 450r shocks will be plenty adequate. If all you do is jump, you would be better off with a dual or tripple rate spring set-up. Axis,Works,Ohlin's, Elka, etc.... IMO, after going out on a couple of hard trail rides, the 450r's are plenty adequate. Don't waste your money on the others unless all you do is race and jump. They have plenty of adjustment and damping to work in any trail situation. I will wheelie EVERY chance I get even if there is a corner fast approaching. Even skimming the tops of the rocks and not riding the trough's, they seem to work great. If the front end is down on the ground, the feedback is nice and the level of control is great! If I want to rail around the corners in the tight and twisties, I just scoot forward a bit, plant the front end, and roost/rail around the corner with full confidence when the front end is planted.I'm so happy, it makes me teary eyed!:p

in my opinion you'd be better off buying the works for that much. But if you plan to get the R shocks redone for your weight, or even have some place triple rate them you'll be way ahead. But still if there's a good deal on the R shocks WAY better than stock

but then that puts them in the price range of simply buying aftermarkets to start with..

I can't see why I would want them revalved. I may be ignorant(easy now!), but with the pre-load, compression and rebound adjustments and taking into consideration where I ride, I just can't see the benefit. I am very particular about my sled shocks however. I figure at 70-100mph, smokin' through the twisties, throw in some bumps,Ohlin's and revalving of the front shocks did make a huge difference. To get what I really want for the EX, i'd have to spend at least $550. These were around half that and do fine. I do agree, anything above $300.00, might as well get the reallygood stuff. What's another 2-300 bucks at that point.;)

you only need them revalved if you do some hard riding or MX. But I agree, just moderate trail riding they more than fine.

And you get the R shocks and then get them revalved for you and they'll still be better than some aftermarkets because they're fully adjustable.

I beat the utter p*** outta my EX and they are more than adequate. The only reason you would need more is if you do big jumps. Dual or triple rate springs would help. Between the pre-load,compression and rebound adjustments. It's hard not to get it dialed in. All of my riding is raging down a fire road at 60, to rock climbing and descending. It's all mountains here and a lot of the trails are basically washed out riverbeds. All rock. If you set the machine up for big air, you're gonna pay big time in the wash outs. I know the next investment will be a steering stabilizer. I met a guy who put on 100 miles in Roctober Mtn. in Mass this summer. He told me he broke 3 bones in his hand on the gorrilla trail on a previous ride. Had to ride all the way out. If anyone here has ever riddin that place, you know that a stiff, non-adjustable suspension would be hell. Most who ride there the first time never go back. He also has about 34,000$ invested in a 400ex. Pulls it to Moab every year with his friends. Anyhow, Yea! The R's are worth it. Unless you race.

I know! It's hard to believe. But after seeing his truck I believe it. It was a new f350 powerstroke. He took the entire bed off and custom built a diamond plate bed and box set-up for it including a custom bumper. Must have had like $70,000 into it. He was a private contractor in Fairfield CT. Extremely expensive homes and easily one of the wealthiest areas in the northeast. You'd never know he was loaded like that talking to him. Great guy. After seeing him ride, I have no doubts about him. He had a large racing gas can in the back of his truck which was about empty on the 3'rd or 4'th pass. I lost count. By the time we left, about 3p.m., He was around 65 miles and still going. I guess he holds the record in a particular hospital for broken collar bones. Probably around 40 years old, and probably the most hiper person we have ever met in our lives. Entertainment value was huge to say the least! He was riding some tricked out kawasaki. Very narrow off-set beedlock wheels on it. He just skimmed the tops of the rocks,35-40 mph. I will never forget it.

ccd, from the description of where you ride, i would say you would really benefit from a steering stabilizer...now that i have one, i would never ride without!!!!!

Awesome! I have never ridden a bike with one so I was curious if it really makes a difference. Thanks for the info. My birthday was yesterday so it looks like a stabilizer is on the way! LOL:D

i didn't think they would be any help if not racing...then i followed lonestar_r on his 250r with one...and where my bars were being jerked all over the place...i saw little to no bar movement with him...i was slowing down because of the beating i was taking, he was speeding up because he could...i ordered one the follwing monday...best $125 i even spent on the bike...

Cool. I think that's where all the fatigue comes from. Bump steer and everything else related to it. What kind did you get? PEP?

I was contacted by 2 people here with offers to buy some after I had already paid more on e-bay. If you're patient, they will probably hunt you down. Make sure they are in excellent shape though so you don't get a couple of rides in and have to have them revalved. Then you'll pay more in the long run. The ones I got were literraly like new. Should easily last you a season with normal use.

looks on the parts for sale section on this site. Go way back to people parting Rs and send them PMs about their stockers. I sent them to about 20 people and finally found a pair from a guy for 200 shipped. Look hard and keep your eyes open and you'll find exactly what you want.

I got mine off of Ebay for $225 and sold them on here for the same price since I never used them. The buyer put them on a KFX400.
