I haven't heard of too many heating probs on the 400 unless they were jetted too lean. The 400ex is a near bulletproof machine.

I just installed the oil temp dipstick last night. Won't be able to ride until maybe Sunday. I want to know how hot the engine is running. Instructions say 250-300*F is normal.

i had to ride a few hrs stright in 2nd gear in warm weather the other day and when i took my oil stick out smoke was comin off the oil and it was shotting smoke out of the pipe... but then i started it after it was cooled off and no smoke so im assuming it was overheating... oh well the moral of the story dont ride slow to long on the 400ex

Check this thread out. A lot of good stuff on here. Some from Mickey D. Notice what's said about the spark plug and the ability to lower head temp's by 5 degrees. Also, check out the type of oil recommended and why. Best, Steve D

Well I went out and rode it pretty hard yesterday. Oil temp ranged from 235-250*F. Ambient air temp was 75*F.

Is that good or bad? What range should it be in?

mine in any other riding than desert rarely gets above 280F

i think 300+ is when convential oil starts breaking down. i wouldnt continue to ride normal (hard, that is) until temps dropped to 290F.

usually a flat wide open spot where i could lugg it a little in 5th gear would help bring down the temps pretty quickly (thats in the desert)

low rpm's + high wind velocity over the engine = quick cool down time.

this year at rumble on the ridge ATV rally i ran my Full Mx 400ex wide open for the 35 miles straight wide open 4th and 5th gear the entire time except deep muddy sections. The oil tank was very hot when i touched it 3 hours later but the motor ran fine. Now lets say you let it idle for an hour and a half, then you got problems.
