Are any of you guys or girls pilots ??

I'm thinking about going back to school next August and getting my Helicopter pilot license . It's a one year program ( well really 8 months ) that would give me 100 hours of flying experience and be a licensed rotary pilot . The program is offered at a college about an 1hr and half away from here , and they only accept 12 students per year . I'm just waiting for a reply about tuition costs , which I expect to be between $20K - 45K .

So if you are a licensed pilot , how do you like your job? I'm looking for peoples input as to how they enjoy flying .

I've done a bit of gliding, but I don't have a full licence. I've never flown solo.

My older brother took aviation at Sault college out of high school. After school he moved to Guelph and took on a different proffesion entirely. That was his decision though.

Tough course though. Many people flunked out.

You were thinking about going to Sault?

my dad has been good freinds with a helicopter pilot for a while now and he even stayed at our house while he was working in N.O. after Katrina. and i asked him those same questions, and he told me exactly what i expected him to say. he told me yeah its cool for the first couple of months but then it just becomes like any other job. im sure it isnt just like getting up to work at a 9-5 office job but you get the idea

Nah , I'd be going to Canadore College in North Bay . The program is run out of Canadore , but the pilots/professors work for Gateway Helicopter .

I was reading the write up about the program on Gateway's website , and they said because there is only 12 people per year , the chances of flunking are very small . Most people that don't graduate , are those that don't attend class . If you miss 5% of the course , you don't pass .

Just got off the phone with the flight school , and it's $66.300 to do the program here in town which is 1 on 1 training or $69, 700 to go out of town . Out of town will provide me with all books , suit, helmet , training , cpr , whimis , survival training etc .

Time to see if the bank will loan me $70 000

I'm a 16 year old (soon to be 17) student pilot. I grew up in a flying family and I love it! I just soloed last week after 8.5 hours of insruction and then logged 5 solo hours in 3 days. Lovin every minute of it. Hopefully I can get my checkride in november sometime. I plan to go to the K-State Salina campus in Salina,Ks to become a professional pilot. Thinking of going the corporate route but not shure yet.

Cool! I have around 100 hours logged in a Piper Warrior. I have close to 150 hours total....about 30 of it is solo time.

All I need to do is get the time to study for the FAA written to get my official license. :D

Make sure you have alot of $$$$ available for the actual flight time. Renting a plane and paying the instructor is expensive!!! I did my training through our local FBO.

Canada has helicopters? I thought they only had moose,Mounties and snowmobiles:confused:

:D

When I was in high school I was looking into going into the Air Force ROTC program at Ohio University and then go into the Air Force as an officer. My high school sweetheart (who I thougt I was going to marry) said she'd never marry a pilot in the military so I opted not to go. I'm happy with my job now but sometimes I regret not going.

I had just started getting certified for my fixed wing private pilots license in about 2001, then some problems arose in our family(store got robbed, insurance did nothing, etc.) So I never continued.

I'm planning on getting started in a rotary certification sometime soon, just because I love to fly, and I want to have it as a base for an aviation career.

Being a pilot is a great choice!

I do not have much expierence with flying schools like you are going to. Due to the fact I got all my training from the USAF.

But, I will say being pilot is very rewarding. And I am sure you will enjoy every second of it.

And although you may never get to fly F-16's like I was fortunite to do. You will get real satisfaction with what you are doing.

Also, like mentioned before on here. Be prepared to spend mucho $$$$$$$$$.

Yeah we got helicopters up here ... The mounties use them to track the moose and stranded snowmobilers . :D

I've always had an interest in flying . Before I went to college I was going to go to flight school , but at the last second I opted for engineering ( should have stuck to flying) . My GF supports me 110% , even though it'll cost a fortune .

Just a quick question for those of you that do fly for a living ... what kind of salary do you make ?? You can PM me the info instead of posting it on here if you like .

Also with being able to take the course here in town , I can start anytime I like instead of the August to April of the College program .

I think you guys like to break stuff on purpose. Repeat after me: c-o-d-e o-n-e. :D I think flying would probably be one of the most satisfying careers out there. I've been lucky enough to get a little stick time in a sailplane and an F-16. The 16 was easier to fly, what with all them computerized gadgets. Of course, the IP in the front seat helped a little, too.

I completely agree.

With how modern technology is getting these days. The F-16 was very easy to fly.

I started on a B-52 and then worked my way up to the F-16.. And I thought the B-52 was significantly harder to operate than the F-16.

The technology this things have these days is mind boggling.

And you don't even feel it when you go through the sound barrier. I was a little disappointed.. Oh well, I pulled seven G's myself in a split "S", so I guess that made up for it.
