The '85 is the least desirable of the LT's and it does not have the powervalve. But, depending on what kind of price you can get it for you're looking at a fun toy.

I had a 92 and loved it . I had a-arms and swingarm from Laeger , shocks, axle , skid plates, bumper and grab bar , nerf bars . The engine was done by LRD with a full LRD exhaust system , beadlock tires . The bike ripped !!! I took on modded banshees with ease . The 92 had a powervalve . If I were you I wouldn't get the 85 .. like Guy said ... no powervalve . Keep an eye out for a 92.

Pick yourself up a copy of this months atvsport. There's a whole article on the history of the LT 250 and 500, how they changed and how they stacked up against the 250R. Pretty interesting stuff. Spec. sheet says the 500 has a top speed of 78 mph. stock.

I had an 85 lt250r, works shocks, pro action rear shock, dg pipe, uni filter, and some other things, they are pretty wide stock, and also pretty long. It was fast in my opinion, very fast. My banshee ripped it still but it was pretty killer, and i know it was faster than my 400ex, i dragged a 450r with it (the lt), lost but i mean i wasnt crushed. Fun bikes.

for something to screw around on - yes

full time serious quad - no

They are scary fast, handle like junk and are as unreliable as can be. I used to own a worked 92 LT.

I realize it means nothing about the performance of the quad. Just saying 78 mph on a quad is pretty fast. Just found that interesting when all stock quads now a days are high sixties low seventies stock.

I just sold 85 lt250r for $1000. They are pretty slow I would get a 1987 and newer because thats when they went to the powervalve motor. The rear shocks are usually blown and the swingarm bolts have a tendency to break so look out for those two things.

I had a 91 and it was garbage it handled terrible and I cracked the frame every time I even contemplated riding it. It had lonestar arms and works pro series shocks along with tires an axle and a few other things. The only good thing about that quad was that the LRD 265 flat ripped but combine that with a crappy handling chassis and you have troubles on the MX track for shure.
