I finally got a 250r. After 10 years of going without a quad, I finally got one! It is a 1987 250r, completely stock, near mint. Well, pretty darn close to it. I wanted to keep it that way, but I think I need a little more down low. I weigh 250 Lbs. (yeah, I know). I ride mostly woods, never race, I prefer acceleration over top speed. Did I choose the wrong quad? NO WAY! 2 strokes are so much more fun to ride, and I love the R's low stance.
I wanted to get a 12t front sprocket(more power down low right?) But I can't find one online. I have checked Ronnies, Rocky Mountain, DennisKirk, and a few others. But all I find are 13,14, and 15t fronts. Why? Is a 12t a bad Idea? My gearing right now is 13/39. I really don't want a 42+ rear sprocket(the equivelant of droppin 1 tooth on the front, right?). I know there are other ways to get more power, I just want to keep it's classic beauty. And I'm poor! Thanks.

from what i understand the disadvantage of going 12 on the front is its too small and then wears out your chain faster... thats what ive heard at least, i dunno, i have stock gearing... i actually think i have a brand new 12 sprocket for a 250r lying around in my garage somewhere, but i think i got it from rockymountaini, but i dont remember...

I have ran a 12 tooth sprocket on the R when I was strictly trail riding and it helped with power down low but I wouldn't suggest it for anything else though because you are CONSTANTLY shifting. If you can't find it anywhere I can give you a number to a guy locally that sells it that could probably ship it to you. I think it cost about $15. I now run 13/39 so I can have a broader powerband.

i run a 12t for supercross and the quads accelerates like a mother...however 13t is about perfect IMO for anything with a 250r besides drag racing obv.

I'm a big guy too, and run 13/39. just get your cylinder ported for low, mid and get a pipe to match, should run you about 400.00 for both. maybe even cheaper if you find a good used pipe, there are plenty of them out there.
