im a pretty knowledgeable guy when it comes to quads and dirt bike, but the one thing i never really understood where the brakes, i never had any problem with them so i never got to learn how to fix them. well the rear brakes on my trusty old '93 300ex went out today, i opened up the thing-a-ma-jig that holds the fluid (the thing by the exhaust ) and there wasnt any fluid, so i added some dot-4 and it didnt really help, i think i may have air in the line, but i have n idea how to check or fix it if i do. also my break pads do look pretty worn but i think it has at least three more rides in them, is there an adjustment i need to make because the pads are thin, im clueless about breaks other than knowing how to change pads. please reply back quick i was hopeing to ride this saturday. thanks

The 'thing-a-ma-jig' is the master cylinder reservoir.

To bleed the brakes....

Remove the master cylinder reservoir cap.
Top off with the correct fluid.
Locate the bleeder valve on the caliper (Doohickie that holds the pads).
Attach a length of tubing to the bleeder valve and place the other end in a container. Brake fluid is nasty stuff.
Push the lever down and hold.
Loosen the bleeder valve until air and/or fluid comes out (if any)
Tighten bleeder valve.
The lever should be held down while doing the last two steps.
Release the lever.
Top off reservoir.
Repeat untill the lever is firm.
Replace reservoir cover.
