Anyone have any trouble having the side cover replaced from being cracked behind the kick starter? I got the 4 year warranty and hope it will cover it.

I have already called and got the runaround. I just kinda wondered if anyone else had theirs replaced under warranty or if they had trouble getting theirs replaced too.

I have been trying and trying to get to the root of this problem.

to help my search can you tell me?
do you have a aftermarket carb?
aftermarket cdI?
stronger valve springs?
are you running a tad lean?

Stock carb, stock springs, stock cdi, and I may be a little lean but I don't know for sure. From what I read on other sites it cracks them when the kickstart comes back up hard, but that's just what I read and I don't know for sure. I didn't know to look for it when I bought my 450, so I don't know how long it has been like that.

it happens when you have the throttle down when kicking it

yes it is deffinitely from kick back
what is making it kickback is the big question.. some say the valves not getting over the lobes and the springs actually pushing it backwards.

others say it is firing a little soon and actually igiting the fuel and pushing the engine backwards.

yes if you hold the throttle in while kicking the cdi will advance the spark possibly causing the above reason.

I started mine holding the throttle in for several months riding pretty much daily and it didn't happen for a long time.then it did and I made dang sure I wasn't holding the throttle in and it has still happened twice more.

Like I said, I bought mine used and the guy said not to touch the throttle, and I don't. It almost always starts right up. I know several other people who have 04 or 05 450r's and I know they touch their throttle almost everytime they start them. I checked their quads yesterday and neither one had a crack, not to say it won't happen, but hasn't yet.

How much oil do you tipically loose out during a race or ride with the cracked case?

my last one was bad
the crack went all the way in to the actual case about 2 inches.

I lost all the engine oil as well as just the tranny oil like it normally does.

I kicked it kicked back and heard it very loud CRACK with in the about 30 seconds of checking it out both sides were dry.

it happened at the starting line of a dead engine start race.

:eek2: :eek2: Mine isn't that bad, and I hope it doesn't get that bad. Mine is got a crack that is by the bolt going into the casing that is about level with the kicker. It hasn't even made it around to the outer part of the cover yet, so I am hoping it will last.

Just an update, took it to the dealer last night and it is supposed to be getting fixed under the 4 year warranty.

Can someone provide a picture of the case that is being cracked, I just bought a new 05 and want to keep an eye out but I am not sure what cover you guys are talking about.

I don't have any pics, but mine cracked under the bolt that is a little above and towards the rear of the kicker. I have seen one that cracked all the way to the kick starter.
