The only performance mods my 400ex has is a slip-on hmf, uni filter, and jets. I do some 300ft dirt drag racing on the weekends, and i ordered a cam to give me some more power. I got a stage 1 hotcam, and it should get here tuesday. I want a piston but dont know much about installing them, but i talked to a guy tonight and he said i should get a stage 2 hotcam and a piston, and he can put in the piston for me.
So would a stage 2 work better with a 10.8:1 piston in 300ft drags, or would a stage 1 be better?

Im keeping stock bore, so what combo would work better? And whats going on with the stage 2 changin to 3 or wutever? Which is which?

Thanks

i would agree on the stage 2 over the stage 1 cam.

grass dragds are all bout getting traction this time of year. stage 1 cam is more for top end i think. you don't need all top end. heck my friend beat a pipe yfz with his slip on 400ex.

What did they change...cuz stage 2 changed to 3 didnt it? What is the new stage 2 then?

And ive been reading some old threads, and everyones saying you should get a topend cam with a piston, because the pistons give alot of bottom end. But i do 300ft dirt drags, and some trails, and on the drag strip, i hardly get into 4th gear with my 14tooth sprocket, and i never get into 5th.....so would a stage 1 hotcam and an 10.8:1 or a 11:1 piston give me rediculously too much bottom end, or would it work well for me?

thanks for any info

higher comp pistons will add power throughout the entire powerband, but changing the cam timing will change where your powerband is. i dont know what hotcams "stage 2 and 3" really mean in terms of timing so i cannot help there, sorry!

k im prob just gonna stick with the stage1 that i already ordered, cuz it gets here tomorrow and theirs only two races left in the season, so i have just enough time to break it in and see what it will do. Im prob gonna get a 10.8 or 11:1 JE this winter
this things gonna be a torque monster

let me clear this. The bigger of a cam you go, the more top end you get and the more bottom end you will loose. The stage 1 is an all aroundcam (hotcams reccomends it for stock bore up to 426cc), no loss in bottom end power. you will see a good amount of bottom end from it and mostly midrange and a little top end. The stage 2 your not supposed to loose bottom end but you will gain good midrange and top end power, The stage 3 (old stage 2) you will loose bottom end but gain more mid range power and more top end. :)
