I used 1500 degree paint on my stock 300 head pipe and it didnt work, Bubbled up, and scratched extremly easy. It was also prepped right. I would try to find a 2,500 or possably 3,000 degree paint. Or if you have the money ceramic coat it.

Actually we painted my brothers header on his honda prelude with some 3,000 degree paint and it worked fine for about 2 months and we heat taped it.

dont paint it, even with the high temp... it looks good right up until the header gets hot! then it bubbles, smokes, smells, and then it looks horrible!!

i just used krylon 1200 degree grill paint. sanded down any rough spots and cleaned off as best as i could. I heated the pipe up first with a little propane torch then sprayed on the first coat. After i had it completely painted i heated it up one more time, then installed it. To make sure it would stick good i rode it for about an hour to make sure it stuck, it stunk and smoked a little bit but its holding great! Ive had it muddy and sand all over it and even pressure washed it.

About the polished heat shield, thats just stainless steel. So i started out with 180 grit and slowly worked my way up to 2000 grit. it still looks good to this day. If you wanted to, i believe the header is also stainless so you could polish that too. Heres a pic of my muffler after i polished it. I used mothers polish on that.

I didn't even do all that, I just roughed up the pipe with some sand paper and sprayed it with rustoleum high temp flat black. Held up fine no problems?!?!?

What do you mean? Does is need to be hotter for the paint to set properly? (seriously, does it)

Meh, think I'm gonna try this polishing thing all you crazy kids are talking about anyway. Would that work for the heatshield?

I painted my header to with 1500 degree stuff and it looked good. i started it up and it burnt a little and the stuff that stayed on turnt to pouder so if i tuched it it would just rub off. I polished once to and the header smoked and the shine went away and header was brown color again.

if you have the money you could always send them to Jet hot it has a polished look to them and it will hold up well

thinking of doing this to mine . My 66 stang has jet hot headers the've been on there for 6 years and still look new ;)

what about the wrap that the chopper guys use. I bet that would look good. just dont know where to get it and how much it would cost.

i wonder if dura-coat would work well. i use it when i refinish a gun and it is very strong and resistant to chemicals and heat. i'll try it tonight. only downside is you have to bake it on in the oven(makes wife mad)

it looks more like a powder coat but it goes on as a liquid with an airbrush. then just bake it to cure
