St. Clairsville, OH (10/8/05) – Since the summer break it has been dry and fairly dusty especially at Yadkinville, but dust wouldn’t be a problem at Powerline Park as the remains of tropical storm Tammy marched up the east coast dropping several inches of rain along the way, which set the stage for yet another Ohio mud race.

The rain and high gas prices didn’t seem to deter many ATV racers from attending as over 500 hundred riders signed up excluding the 58 youth riders, which was a record attendance for ATVs at Powerline Park.

The Hillside was packed with vehicles and by Saturday Morning many were having trouble finding a spot to park on the slippery grass.

This unlucky driver tried to swing a right off the main road on an off chamber hillside and found vehicle sliding sideways down the hill jack knifing his trailer. Throughout the day, several other vehicles also jack knifed before they taped off the section and cars parked right along the road.

While many adults were stressing over the rain and the mud, this little guy didn’t have a care in the world as he sat fire side relaxing Saturday morning.

The Pro Class had the largest signup of the season with 22 riders as Adam McGill made his Pro Class debut with both Rob Zimmerman and John Natalie Jr. signing up as well. Yes, I said, John Natalie Jr, which is probably no surprise to some because he has attended several GNCC races over the years in his off season.

John was his usual self smiling ear to ear most of the day, and he had plenty to smile about since he just signed a new deal with Roll Design & Elka for 2006, and of course he will remain with Blingstar with his signature line of products.

The Afternoon Race had exactly 220 riders signed up for the race and as they made there way to the starting rows, it began to drizzle, which had umbrellas popping up everywhere.

#66 Adam McGill finally completed the 11 races to wrap-up his Pro Am Championship, so he was excited to finally be on Pro Row in hopes of making his way back to the podium before the end of the year.

#13 Todd Knippenberg was lined up and ready to race, but sadly it was rumored that this may be his last season of racing and if it is true, he will be missed. Also, Chad Duvall announced that he would be retiring from racing as well, but he could still be found at the track supporting the career of his son, Thad Duvall on the motorcycle.

John Natalie Jr wasn’t his normal #13 and was assigned the guest Pro #167, and his biggest sponsor this weekend was the Borich Family as they provided him everything he needed to race this weekend except for the Blingstar front bumper which Natalie Jr provided.

The Championship remains up for grabs in 4 Stroke A between Todd Rothermel and Taylor Kiser, but with Kiser’s win at Unadilla and Rothermel finishing in fifth, it give Kiser a significant advantage heading into Powerline Park.

Kiser unfortunately would only finish two laps at Powerline Park this weekend, with Rothermel finishing in third, which really tightened it up for the Ironman with only a few points separating them. Kiser still has the advantage, but if Rothermel can finish in the in first of second and Kiser doesn’t finish any better than 6th, the Championship would go to Rothermel.

The points game, we have to love it.

Craig Reed has the title wrapped up in Open A, but he second spot is still up for grabs between Ryan Lane and Brian Shaw

Mike Benson has had an up and down season with some great races and some bad luck along the way, so he decided to finish out the season on the GasGas for some testing.

Admin
10-12-2005, 08:20 PM
Wes Stone wrapped up the 2 Stoke A/B Championship at Yadkinville, and he gave Junior Class a try at Unadilla finishing 5th, so he decided to see how he would do this weekend in Open A.

John Rowling finished his worst race of the season in the Vet Class at Unadilla with a fourth place finish after getting off to a bad start, and fourth is nothing to complain about for an old guy like Rowling :D

Rowling is currently ranked 4th in Points as well, and he could have easily won the class this season even if he DNFed two races in Vet, but unfortunately, he will only have 8 races at the end of the year in the Vet Class, but I did notice that the rules states you must enter 9 events to be eligible for year end awards, but doesn’t say they all have to be in the same class?

Admin
10-12-2005, 08:35 PM
Nathan Gogno started off the season with a string of second place finishes, but a injury sidelined him for 5 races, and he made his return at Yadkinville, but hasn't been able to get back into the swing of it till this weekend when finished 3rd.

Tom Hertz, there isn’t much more to say as the photos tells it all just by looking at his ornery grin behind his helmet.

With Brandon Sommers and Tyler Lenig wrapping up the one and two spots in 4 Stroke B, the battle is now on between Adam Mallet and Donald Ockerman for the third spot.

Ockerman(Right) was up for the challenge this weekend as he took the 4 Stroke B win with Adam Mallet finishing in 4th place. If Ockerman can finishing up front next weekend ahead of Mallet he will claim the third spot.

Mason Stephenson (Left) wasn’t in points running as he switched between classes this season, but he did give it a run at win this weekend leading the Open B Class in the first lap, but was out of the race after two laps.

With the race about to begin, it was time for the riders prayer, and Bill Ballance lowered his head in prayer and thanks for his speedy recovery.

The entire Pro Row rose for the National Anthem with Umbrellas providing some shelter from the rain before they covered themselves in mud in less than a few minutes.

With the start of the race about to begin, I raced into position for the start and almost fell flat on my face doing it, so I walked like I was on ice across the track, which provided a good chuckle for Big John watching me tip toe across the field.

Pro Class Start

Rick Towery waved the Green Flag, and the roar of the engines broke the silence in the air with Bill Ballance and Chris Borich jumping out to the early lead down the stretch.

Admin
10-12-2005, 08:58 PM
Rounding the 1st turn, Bill Ballance remained in the lead as he pulled yet another Holeshot this year aboard his Yamaha YFZ450, and as Ballance would put it “my powerful Yamaha YFZ450 catapulted me out to the early lead.” In chase were Borich, Yokley, Duvall, and Lagzdins.

Admin
10-12-2005, 08:59 PM
Borich pulled his Honda up along side of Ballance heading into turn two

Admin
10-12-2005, 09:00 PM
Ballance was able to hold off Borich for atleast the third turn, but several turns later, Borich was able to make his pass and take over the lead before they headed into the woods.

Admin
10-12-2005, 09:01 PM
At the back of the pack heading into turn four were Duvall, Houston, Kuhnle, Br Ballance, Derisi, Hulsey, Knippenberg, and Cook.

Admin
10-12-2005, 09:03 PM
Thomas Barrett stalled his 450R heading into turn two and was busy trying to kick start it while he held the last place spot. His bad luck would continue as he would only complete one lap along with Bryan Hulsey.

Pro Am Class Start

#48 Frank Grimplin was back in action this weekend for only his third race of he season, and he was off to a great start as he looks over to his right checking out #63 Scott Barron hard on the gas in a race to the first turn.

Admin
10-12-2005, 09:20 PM
Barron was able to outrun Grimplin to the first turn and take over the lead with Joshua Ribley and James Wahl moving in behind.

Admin
10-12-2005, 09:24 PM
Barron stayed on the gas and maintained the lead for the first three laps of the race with Duane Johnson moving into second place right behind him followed by Rob Hertz.

Frank Grimplin would drop back to 10th by the end of lap one and finished out the day in 13th.

Admin
10-12-2005, 09:32 PM
Todd Demaree new slogan "Got Grass" as he was eating his fair share from the roost of Tyler Lenig who made yet another class jump up to Pro Am to test his skills.

Admin
10-12-2005, 09:35 PM
Brandon Sturdivant had his normal black cloud over him as he was off to a last place start and would only go on to finish two laps :(

Sturdivant bad luck didn't stop with Brandon this weekend as Brent also fell victim when his 450R just shut off on him in the third lap while he was running in third place and less than 14 seconds out of the lead.

Dave Simmons and Derek Litterini also would ended up with DNF finishes for reasons that I am not aware.

Admin
10-12-2005, 09:37 PM
Open A Class

Brandon Sommers must have ESP because he left the rest of his class sitting on the line as he jumped out to a huge lead right away with Brian Shaw and Darrell Bozarth trying to reel him in down the stretch.

Admin
10-12-2005, 09:40 PM
Bozarth was able swing tight around turn one with Shaw drifting outside behind Sommers as they sprinted to turn two.

Admin
10-12-2005, 09:41 PM
Sommers was able to hold off the charge of the pack and maintain the lead through turn three, but by the end of lap one, Brian Shaw would take over the lead with Sommers dropping back to third.

Admin
10-12-2005, 09:44 PM
Mike Benson was off to a slow start on his GasGas along with Mike Johnston on his YFZ. Johnston would never recover and finish out the day in 19th behind Lee Dickerson.

Benson would charge his way from near the back of the pack to finish out the day in 9th place, and he is excited about the Ironman where he will make a few adjustments and hope to be up near the front.

Admin
10-12-2005, 09:45 PM
The most dramatic comeback was that of Craig Reed starting in almost last place and blasting his way up to second place by the end of the lap and into the lead by the second lap with Sommers moving in behind him over 30 seconds back, and Shaw dropping back to third.

Admin
10-12-2005, 09:48 PM
4 Stroke A Class Start

Travis Styles held the lead rounding turn one with Chris Conklin and Mark Notman in chase

Admin
10-12-2005, 09:51 PM
Styles would capture the Holeshot, but he would drop back to third by the end of the lap with Zac Phillips taking over the lead followed by Taylor Kiser.

Kiser was out of the race by the third lap and Styles would move back up to second place with Phillips pulling away to take the win with Styles maintainig the second spot followed by Todd Rothermel working his way up from 9th to finish 3rd ahead of Mark Notman.

I had one of my closet calls of the season as Marc Marshall(Neon Troy Lee Design Gear) spun out and darted right at me on the sidelines. I jumped out of the way and he clipped my foot as he almost used me as a berm, which was a little scary.

The fans around me couldn't believe that I wasn't run over by him and luckily they yelled because I never saw him coming till the last minute.

Admin
10-12-2005, 09:57 PM
Junior Class Start

Chad Wallace went hot into the corner and was two wheeling it with Jim Pinkston and Pete Stadtmueller right behind him.

Admin
10-12-2005, 09:58 PM
Wallace was able to regain control and take over the lead before Jeffrey Vensel would make the pass and lead the race to the finish line and take the win with Wallace finishing out the day in third place.

Admin
10-12-2005, 10:02 PM
Jim Pinkston must have been in a hurry to get home to watch something on TV at 4PM, or he just wanted to show off in front of his St. Clairsville hometown crowd because he had his best race of the season finishing in 2nd place and moving right in behind Pete Stadtmueller in 5th place in points after Pete had his worst race of the season with a DNF.

Admin
10-12-2005, 10:08 PM
Ben Wrightsman removed his ugly graphics kit:D and had his best race of the season finishing in 9th place:macho

Admin
10-12-2005, 10:10 PM
Justin Buss was off to a slow start, but he stayed on the gas and worked his way up to 5th by the end of the race and remains 3rd in points.

Admin
10-12-2005, 10:12 PM
Christopher Pettit charged from last place to finish a season best 4th place.

Senior / 2 Stroke A/b Class Start

Brian Edwards aboard his Honda 250R lead the way around turn one with Wayne Edwards right behind him leading the Senior class.

Wayne Edwards has been competing occasionally in the Vet Class the past couple of years, but this was his first race as a Senior class rider.

Admin
10-13-2005, 03:10 PM
By the second turn, Wayne Edwards remained in the lead and would lead the race from start to finish in his Senior Class debut, and he would record his best overall finish of the season with 50th Overall.

Admin
10-13-2005, 03:15 PM
John Cunningham Jr was to a good start, but he would drop back to fifth by the end of the first lap and gradually work his way back up through the class to finish in third behind Dave Hogg.

Joey Margueria must have used his helmet wings to hover through the mud because he was able to pass Dirk DeCasare in the second lap and take over the lead while Brian Edwards would drop out of the race after taking over an hour to complete lap one.

Margueria aboard his Yamaha Blaster would take the win over the five over Honda 250R riders, which something you don’t see everyday or expect to see ever again. Great Ride Margueria

Admin
10-13-2005, 03:16 PM
Bruce Marshall was another 250R rider that only managed to complete one lap :(

Admin
10-13-2005, 03:17 PM
Vet Class Start
With all eyes on Ricky Towery the Vet Class Race was about to begin, and it was very obvious who had electric start and kick start machines.

Admin
10-13-2005, 03:21 PM
Bryan Davis aboard his stealth 450R held the lead through turn one as he has really come on strong since Round #8 at the Mountaineer with his 2nd Place finish in the Junior Class. After winning three in a row in Junior, he jumped to Vet Class at Unadilla because Honda stopped paying contingency money to the Junior Class, and he took home the win and $500 bucks for his troubles.

The taste of victory must have felt good because he was after another this weekend, but it wasn’t meant to be as he would slip back one position to finish an impressive 2nd Place and only earn himself $400 bucks.

Admin
10-13-2005, 03:26 PM
Thomas Wright and John Rowling would both start out in the top five with Wright taking over the lead by the end of the first lap with Rowling right behind him while Davis actually slipped back to seventh.

By the second lap, Wright experienced issues of his own and dropped back to fifth with Rowling taking over the lead and would never look back to claim his fourth Vet Class win of the season.

Wright would charge back up to third by the last lap, but he would experience problems once again and finish out the day in 11th to conclude his season. He is off to Hawaii for three weeks.

Admin
10-13-2005, 03:28 PM
Blaine Shick remains true to his trusty 250R and remained in the top three all day finishing just five seconds behind Bryan Davis in 3rd place.

Jason Meeks finished out the day in 5th place, which was a season best

Admin
10-13-2005, 03:31 PM
Steve Zapfe locked up the Vet Class Championship with his fourth place finish after Jeff Brest had one of his worst races of the season finishing 16th, which was actually the break Ken Tincher needed to possibly squeeze his way into the the second spot at the Ironman.

Admin
10-13-2005, 03:34 PM
Open B Class Start

This Polaris Predator grabbed the Holeshot, and he had plenty of motivation considering he didn't even start the race with goggles:eek:, which is crazy!!!

Gabe Phillips would take only till the second lap to move up to first place where he would stay till the finish line with a seven minute gap between him and Craig Wilson in second place.

Admin
10-13-2005, 03:35 PM
Blake Kramer had a Yo-Yo race day moving all over the place from 4th to 8th to 9th and finally back up to finish his second best finish of the season in 6th place.

Admin
10-13-2005, 03:37 PM
Jeremy Stuckwisch was able to hold off Larry Weese to finish out his day in 9th and move past Matt Copley in points to 7th place behind Blake Kramer.

Check out those Blue Tires:huh

Admin
10-13-2005, 03:42 PM
4 Stroke B Class Start
Kevin Hazenberg on his Z400 was right behind Christopher Stephens at the start, but Donald Ockerman would work his way up from 5th to win his first race of the season with Unadilla’s winner Michael Howell finishing in second place with Stephens right behind him in third.

Admin
10-13-2005, 03:44 PM

Admin
10-13-2005, 03:47 PM
Sport Class Start

Jacob Jones grabbed the Holeshot aboard his 300EX, but Tom Bobrowicz would take over the lead by the end of lap one and lead until the last lap when Josh Konecheck in his first Sport Class race would make the pass and take the win.

Admin
10-13-2005, 07:58 PM
I headed to the 10 mile marker of the 11 mile track to wait and see who would pop up over the hill first, and #2 Chris Borich would be the first rider to crest the hill leading the Pro Class.

Admin
10-13-2005, 07:59 PM
Only a few seconds later, #1 Bill Ballance crested the hill behind Borich

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:03 PM
Just over 10 seconds back was #7 Chris Jenks in third with Yokley, Smiley, and McGill.

#66 Adam McGill eating plenty of roost off Smiley’s Maxxis tires as he was completely coated in mud holding down the 6th spot.

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:07 PM
Johnny Gallagher was up to 7th place followed by Rice, Lagzdins, Baker, and Natalie Jr in 10th place.

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:14 PM
Michael Houston wasn't off to the great start that he had at Unadilla as he was back to 13th behind Rob Zimmerman

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:17 PM
#13 Todd Knippenberg was back to 19th and pulled over after the second lap when dropped back to last place and called it a day after both Bryan Hulsey and Thomas Barrett were out after the first lap.

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:21 PM
Borich heading into the pits on the second lap with Ballance and Yokley pulling in right behind him as he pitted for goggles and a splash of fuel before blasting back out of the pits remaining in the lead.

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:24 PM
Smiley would opt not to stop at all on the 2nd lap, which allowed him to jump from fourth to second place by edging out Yokley as he pulled out of his pits.

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:26 PM
Ballance would dropped back to fourth place as he exited the pits with McGill moving into fifth place followed by Chris Jenks back to seventh.

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:27 PM
Jeremy Rice was running strong in eighth place followed by Lagzdins

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:29 PM
John Natalie Jr rounded out the top 10 as he stopped for goggles and a fresh pair of gloves.

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:30 PM
#5 Chad Duvall was back to 14th place and opted not to stop for a fresh pair of goggles and instead tossed his pair to his pit crew as the hammered the throttle past Pro Row.

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:33 PM
Brandon Ballance was back to 15th as he pitted for gloves and goggles and you could tell he was frustrated with his position as his crew quickly prepared him to head out for another lap.

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:36 PM
Waiting at the finish line for the riders to come around for the end of the second lap were Jay Gobel, Joe Borich, and Mike Yokley waiting to see who would be out front once the Pros emerged from the trees for a brief run through the field before completing the lap.

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:37 PM
Chirs Borich would maintain the Overall lead, but Matt Smiley was only a few second behind him in 2nd place.

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:37 PM
William Yokley was hanging tight with Smiley

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:38 PM
Ballance emerged only a few seconds later in fourth place

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:42 PM
The top 4 riders were all within sight of one another as Chris Borich disappears behind the trees at the top of the hill as Smiley, Yokley, and Ballance follow.

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:46 PM
Jenks remained in 6th place behind McGill with his helmet visor out of sorts.

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:46 PM
Johnny Gallagher continued to hold down 7th Place as he shined once again in the mud.

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:50 PM
Bryan Baker wasn't in podium contingency this weekend back in 11th place, but it didn’t slow him down one bit as he would make his moves in the third lap to leap up to 8th place by passing Natalie Jr, Lagzdins, and Rice.

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:51 PM
Michael Houston was going in the opposite direction slipping from 12th back to 16th as he finished out the 2nd lap without goggles

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:56 PM
Back in the pits in the beginning of the third lap for the top runners, but this time Smiley would pit himself and Yokley's crew was on the ball as he was able to jump out of the pits ahead of Smiley and take over the 2nd spot with Smiley dropping back to 3rd with Chris Jenks briefly taking over 4th while Ballance remained in his pits.

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:57 PM
Chris Jenks stopped for a quick pair of goggles and barely came to a stop before getting back on the gas hoping to beat Ballance out of the pits.

Admin
10-13-2005, 08:58 PM
Ballance was able to out run Jenks down the stretch and maintain his 4th spot with Jenks right behind him in 5th place.

Admin
10-13-2005, 09:00 PM
Johnny Gallager was up to 6th Place as he pulled into his pits as Jenks and Ballance disappeared around the turn.

Admin
10-13-2005, 09:03 PM
In the final lap of the race, their wasn't anything that was going to slow down Borich as he pulled away from Yokley in second place as his Honda 450R began to overheat and leave a trail of steam as he focused on finishing out the race without stopping to attempt to cool down his 450R.

Admin
10-13-2005, 09:05 PM
William Yokley had Ballance moving in behind him after passing Smiley, which forced Yokley to ditch his goggles, so he could have the best vision possible to slice his way through the trees.

Admin
10-13-2005, 09:08 PM
Adam McGill was running strong in 7th Place until his 450R would just shut off on him and wouldn't restart with less than a mile to go to the finish line :(

Admin
10-13-2005, 09:09 PM

Johnny Gallagher wouuld hold on to finish 6th Overall to tie his season best finish he earned at the last mud race the Penton.

Admin
10-13-2005, 09:20 PM
Even with the sloppy conditions, John Natalie Jr finished an impressive 8th Overall on borrowed equipment, but he wanted to be sure to thank Fox Shocks, East Coast, Gibson, Maxxis, Blingstar, and all his sponsors for their support this season.

John will be back at the Ironman to compete for his spot on the podium, and what would be more fitting than to have the "Ironman" John Natalie Jr" take the Overall at one of the toughest races of the season.

Admin
10-13-2005, 09:21 PM
Andy Lagzdins finished out his day in 11th place behind Jeremy Rice and Chad Duvall.

Scott Barron would hold the lead in the Pro Am Class going into the last lap, but a flat tire would drop him back to third and 19th Overall.

I think it is time that Scott invest in some Tireballs because this was the second race this season that his run at the front was ended from a flat tire.

Admin
10-13-2005, 09:31 PM
Duane Johnson would take the Win in the Pro Am Class and finish 12th Overall ahead of Rob Hertz.

Admin
10-13-2005, 09:35 PM
Tyler Lenig's Pro Am debut didn't turn out as good as it could have, but Tyler proved he has the speed to run in the class as he was up to fourth spot after two laps before running into problems, and hopefully he has better luck at the Ironman.

With the racing action over, it was time to head home, which was just as challenging as the race for some as the tractors were kept busy pulling out vehicles.

Pro Armor's Thunderbird choice for a rental car was great for getting some looks, but it didn't fair well in the mud and needed to be pulled out, which is where this story goes down hill because they quickly found out the radiator mounts wouldn't hold up as an anchor for towing. The mounts gave way and busted the radiator, which left him stranded waiting for the rental car company to come to his rescue.

I suggest a Hummer for the next GNCC race and leave the Thunderbirds for the GNC events.

Well this concludes the coverage from the Ironman, and if you want to see more photos from the race be sure to check out the photo gallery as I need to prepare to head to Kentucky this weekend for the ATV Show and Pappy will be running with the Morning Race Coverage over the weekend.

Joking I hope...if not I will take those "ugly" graphics, which I still have, and find a way to place them on the ATV Riders Z. haha

Pardon me, just having a (Q)(U)(A)(D)(Z)(O)(N)(E) moment...

WTF...we need to have a QZ vs ATVriders shootout....competition breeds publicity ladies!!

And just for the record...I no longer have that quad, and the new owner will be sporting the original graphics in Crawfordsville I believe....:p

wont see it again? thats the second time he's won in that class this year ona blaster, he is extremely fast on that thing. considering its got stock a-arms, swingarm and rear shock, i'd say he's kinda crazy too, lol
