i dont need links to the end result...lol

the wife snagged a mini dvd recorder and i want a helmet cam. i just did not know if they worked well together or if i should look for a digital recorder.

My guess is that the DVD camcorder is not going to like being banged around - I bet it would skip like a CD player and screw with your recording. One good way to test it... take it riding with your or bang it around as if your are riding...see what happens.

I think the ideal setup would be a full solid state recording system (digital) - no tapes or DVD's....

Pappy i hope you know what you doing with that $4k camera. You have to have one hell of computer to hold the editing software. MOFO it is not High Def. But if Pappy is looking for one there are "Prosumer Cameras" comming out in High Def that are in the Price range of the Xl2

Kenny, talk to Gabe (86atc250r). He was testing several helmet cams a while ago.

Helmetcam.com can give you a list of recorders that work with their helmet cam. I have a sony handycam and it works...........but the disk must be formatted each time you record or view. The trick is...................the recorder MUST be able to record via the aux output..........in otherwords, it must accept input via the output. If it wont do that, it won't work.

Pappy if you are looking for some serious toys like that camcorder give me a call and I will give you all the down low. One thing to look at the Cannons were popular in the beginning, but the Sony's have since taken over. The PD-170 is what I have and it is mucho sweet.

I wonder if a wireless video camera to a remote recording station would be beneficial over a solid-state digital camera?

They are a nice camera, but what I was getting at was mass use not just the best gadget. Look at all your reality shows most of them are shot using Sony's PD-170. I have worked with the Panasonic, but haven't seen the widespread use of it yet.

Oh..., thems is fightin' words. Check out this site http://www.dvxuser.com then decide if gadget is really the word you want to use. :D

I try to avoid reality shows at all cost, but MTV has all but switched over to Panasonic DVX100's, and most of the Entertainment News shows use them for a second camera and B-roll, along with a ton of shows that use them as thier main camera.

Now I'm not saying the PD-170's not an unuseable camera, it's still a very good camera (hell, my boss still uses a VX1000 he got got back in '97), I'm just saying it's an outdated camera compared to the newer stuff. That's why it was replaced with the FX1, but even the FX1 falls short in my eyes. Sure it shoots in HD, but at the moment there's no way of delivering HD except back out to tape for broadcast through an HD capable station/network, or downconverting to SD to burn to DVD. And still that downconverted HD video dosen't look as good as the video from a Panasonic DVX100.

The other major factor in my backing the Panasonic is the Cine-gamma and the progressive scan modes. Now I don't have a DVX, but I do have the DVC30 which I chose over the PD-170 mainly for the 16x lens and the fact I couldn't afford the DVX.

I use Jones cam (http://www.jonescam.tv/) with a Sony PC9. What I'd really like to use for a Helmet cam deck is a Sony PC55, this thing is crazy small, it's about the size of a deck of cards, but it doesn't have a LANC plug so I cant use my LANC remote to start and stop recording with out taking the deck out of my camel-bak.

my recorder did come with a small remote. i haven't tried to use it yet. i think that it's easier to just start it recording and leave it. my tapes can go for 2 hours. just gotta remeber to check my watch....

I can make my tapes go for 2 hours as well, it's just that I've never used it with someone rideing. I've just used it myself for skiing, and I need to be able to start and stop recording cause I don't want 8+ mins of wasted tape while I'm in the chair lift.

true, for riding we stop about every 20 min for about 10...
