well i am looking at upgrading from my 05 300ex to either a 400ex or 45r. probably either in an 05 model. i am looking for something with more power and better suspension for trail riding, than my 300. i am not looking to get ridiculous like a raptor or anything, just a better trail machine with good power.
the 450r doesnt have reverse or electric start, whicj takes points away, but is it THAT much better? would i even remember reverse was a word once i rode it?
the problem is there is no way to test drive atv's, which is how i wound up with this 300ex. if i could test drive these 2 than it would probably be an easy decision, but i cant, and dont want another dissapiontment and money wasted.

i own on 05 ex and rode the 450r.... for trails.. 400ex would be better cause its better on your wallet and has reverse, another reason is because i can destroy my friend on the 450r in trails(it depends on rider tho, and im better in trials then him)... but if u do dunes, alot of non trail open area riding, a 400 will feel weak and non-powerful when ran with 450r's raptors, yfz's, etc... but u said a better trail quad so unless u dont mind paying more id say go with the 400

IMO, I think a 450r is a better trail quad in everyway. Unless you absolutely need reverse.

400ex, not as high matainance and smoother power.

what else do you have to do to a 450r besides oil changes, filter and a few other misc things?

id say go for a 450r for sure, its a better machine overall. yes reverse is nice but i ride trails all the time and i dont use it all that much, but it is nice to have somtimes. if your going to get a 400, go for a z400, its a little more up to date then the ex.

you have to have the valves adjusted more often, and it can get expensive if you take it to a dealership or close to $100 for the shims to do it your self. the plug is around $12-$15 each, and needs to be replaced more often. if you try to lug it without dropping to the 13 up front and ride the clutch more, the clutch will wear faster. why does someone who mostly rides trails, and likes the option of having a reverse need a 450r for when the 400ex is a perfect choice? a little over kill isnt it?

either way, they are both great quads, but i personally rather have the 450. the suspension is definately better on the 450, but you could fairly easily fix that prob on the 400, either way, you would have a great platform to start from

its gotta be a honda...so the ex or the r are my options. is there any reason why i shouldnt buy an 04 450r? i found one that i could pick up for probably 4k, stock and very clean.

buy it:p .... after a weeks time u'll be used to it and be able to smoke all of your buddy's, in the trails(well it depends on how good of a rider they are to, so i better take that last statement back)..... seriously though, thats pretty cheap for a 450, ur gonna want to start moddin' it and a modded 450 will have alot more power, and just be a hell of alot faster than a 400ex with mods
