what is the stock number of teeth on a 400ex front and back. i have a one tooth bigger sprocket on the back can i just drop two in the front to make it one less in the front

stock gearing is 15/38 on 99-04 models you said your gearing is 15/39. if you drop 2 teeth in front it will really lower your gearing. i tooth up front is equal to about 2-3 teeth in the rear. i you drop on tooth up front it is like adding 3 to the rear. righ now you are slightly lower gearing than stock, so if you go down 2 in the front, the bike will have a very solw top speed but tons of power. up in back=lower gearing=slower, down in back=higher gearing=faster,
up in front=higher gearing=faster, down in front=lower gearing=slower.
