well, i was riding my 450r today, and it was for quite a while. and then i noticed like the part of my headpipe that was closest to the motor was turning liek a blueish purpleish color. i am riding with the endcap out, and didn't rejet or anything. and im wondering if it is a problem, and im leaning towards jetting as the problem if there is a problem

any suggestions on what to do?

thanks
-chris

Correct me if I am wrong but won't all pipes turn blue right where they come out of the head after a while.I know most of them I've seen have.

dear god do people speak to hear there brains rattle or what...............

your not lean how can you be lean with just the endcap off, you have no intake modifications so your not getting anymore air into the motor, heat period discolors pipes, it's called a fact of life, mines blue at the engine and she ain't lean :huh

yeah dont listen to the people saying its lean. most headpipes turn blue at the head, especially after they get hot. if it was glowing red thats a different story.

glowing red is normal to see at night after you have been playing for a bit. its interesting too see how red it gets when you hold the throttle down for a moment and then let off, you can see the pipe glow red real fast then cool down quickly.

Thats funny I was thinking the same thing when I read your post...

According to that statement you just made it wouldn't matter what exhaust you bolted up they would all perform the same as the stocker (as long as you only change the exhaust). I sure hope you know the answer to that.

Doing any modification to your exhaust will affect jetting. May be noticable, may not be, but there is a change. Your motor is not limited by just one component (say the airfilter in this case), pull the baffle out and there will a change in airflow! More air flowing through the motor without a change in fuel will cause a lean mixture. No question about it...

Back to the original post, of coarse I would richen up the jets just a tad. Pipes do turn blue, especially chrome ones as mentioned, but the lean mixture will not help at all either.

good looking out guy........................... but a stock exhaust is nothing like a aftermarket, so by pulling the endcap off you pretty much doin nothing for flow because you still have the baffling inside the exhaust that is what truly kills the flow

boltin on a aftermarket exhaust is a different story

i dont think there is anything wrong with your 450, the pipes changing colors is normal, and taking your silencer out doesnt really do anything but make it a bit louder.

Its perfectly normal, they just discolor when hot. The nickle plated pipes trun blue and gold

Aye all pipes will "blue". The only reason some Harley pipes dont, is because they actually have an outer pipe/sleeve over the inner exhaust pipe to hide the discoloration.

Theres no point to add that extra weight to a quad though.
