I'm putting a 440 kit on my 400ex. What else in the engine must be boosted to make it as reliable as possible. Thanks for all of your information.

i think i would probably put in some heavy duty head studs. go to www.gtthunder.com and they have the cheapest ones that i have seen. And mayb a CRF cam chain.

im doing the same thing & also & am considering a connecting rod also , but im goin 12.5 to 1 you should get away with up to 11to 1 with a stock rod.

if the build is done correctly, then it will last just fine. i would recommend heavier duty clutch and springs, and maybe changing the basket though

deffenitely go with a heavy duty rod, carillo rod. a hd cam chain would be a good upgrade too and deffenitely heavy duty headstuds. these should make a pretty reliable 440

Yeah, definitely the Carrillo rod. You should see one of those things; you WILL NOT break it!! I only have an 11:1, 87mm (416) piston, but I wanted to be 100% sure about the bottom end. They're $175 directly from Carrillo Industries.

safest way to go if you have the money:
Different studs
Heavy duty rod
Oversized oil tank and cooler
make sure it is jetted correctly
A good synthetic oil thats wet clutch safe, after the break in.

I'm doin a 440 and was wonderin how important it is to hard face the rocker arms. I heard mixed things about this, and is the after market rod a must for a low comption motor. And how about those clutch baskets any info would be great.

my 440 is great. port and polish it is worth it, it makes the engine run smoother cause it does not have to work as much to get the air in and out

come on you want power and dont know about port and polishing the head.
what you are doing is opening up and removing any casting flaws in your intake ports and match it to your intake this way it is easyer for you to get air in to the engine + you get more a/f in the cylinder= bigger bang more power on the exhaust side you want to remove any casting flaws same as intake side then you want to polish the port smooth this will increase the velocity or speed of the exhaust so you remove the exhaust easyer from the combustion chamber. any more cause that was way too much typing for me
