View Full Version : what size sprockets?

what size gears should i get. Right now i have stock gearing with 20 inch tires. I would like to get it better torque. I race MX. Last friday i was racing another 400ex with all the same motor stuff as me and out of the corners he was pulling me, so i had to beat him on the jumps and stuff. Any help is appreciated.

i take it you still got stock gears (15/38) maybe just put a 14 on the front that should help you out quite a bit. but if you want some really good torque and are willing to loose some topend speed then put a 39 tooth on the back also.

alright thanks man. i am going to be buying one of those kits that have the o-ring chain and front and back sprocket and i just wanted to know what sizes i should probably get. Thanks

ive been running 14/39 gearing for over a year. i couldnt be happier with how quick it is. i know i lost some topend but that dosent bother me to much. im still ahead of everyone else.:p

i first went with it for drag racing and i liked it so i trail rode with it. in 300ft drags i can beat stock and piped banshees, kfx/z, ex, and i can stay right with craptors. stock bore motor only have hmf slip on k&n and rejetted with no lid. and yes i have videos to prove it if noone believes me. and alot of the guys on the other quads were pretty good riders. i see them at all the grass drag events.

get some small tires and it ill get more torq

drop a tooth in the front and you will be really happy

just remember, for every 1 tooth you drop in the front, it is roughly equivalent to 3 in the rear... do a google search for gearing calculators and you will find some useful programs to help you decide just how much to drop

14/38 and smaller tires i run 18's in read and 20's in fornt and ive pulled 450s

Ive tried a lot o f stuff but 14/39 with simple cheap mods was the best combo for me & I run 22''s out back my idle might be a little high but it pulls pretty good & didnt really slow down too much strong low end but relatively quick Im now gonna try 15/38 with the 22''s but its gonna be a 12.5 to 1 440 stage 3 h.c. etc. hope its strong down low but much faster !

what about for a 416 i know this will change things alot. My 416 with the mods in my sig 14/37 will pull with my 450 with the mods in sig but im getting eating alive on larger mx tracks with long straights and not very technical turns. I cant really tell with that chart because it says stock 400 and mine is far from that. what should i do put a factory 15 back on the front or should i mess with the rear or both????

Gearing is gearing. A 440 and a stock 400 with the same gearing, tire sizes, rpm limit will have the same top speed. The 440 will just get there faster.

More bottom end = down in front, up in the rear.
More top speed = up in the front, down in the rear.
