These are ballpark figures.. I'm sure others cann correct me if I'm wrong.

250EX = 14hp
250x/300ex = 18hp
400ex = 28hp
450r = (04/05) 38hp (06) 42hp

These are all just off the top of my head.. so take them with a grain of salt. You may need to add or subtract a couple HP from any of the three.

Also they are all bone stock. Pipe/Filter/Rejet/Cam does wonders for any of them. All Honda ATV's are "corked" coming out of the factory.

The 300ex bumps up quite nicely with only a pipe (full system) and filter. It would hit about 23-24hp at that point. My 330ex runs about 34hp. But, a 450r (or Modified 400ex) WILL SMOKE IT, it has much better technology. HP numbers arent everyhting you have to account torque and revability into it. The 450r just accelerates sooo much faster.

If you want a great machine.. I'd pay the extra cash for a 450r.
Or, get a used 400ex. You can get a GREAT deal on the 400's. And they are great quads. I bought my 300 before the other 3 were even in existence.. lol.

i thought the 250x made just as much power as the 300. i doont know for sure but a couple of mm's for the stroke cant add 4 horses. oh well. i dont care, mines not stock. it dont have alot of mods though, either

you dont think so?tell that to the ama if your ever caught cheating:D yeah a few mm can be substantial as far as increasing displacement and the overall mechanical advantage of the engine
