Pretty sad. No one can stay there for more then i think 3 hours, then they have to leave. It will supposidly take 75-100 years before the radiation level goes down enough for anyone to live there again:(

pretty insane. We watched a video last year and it was pretty sad/gross what happened to someof the people's children that were affected by the radiation. THere were a lot of kid's who's brains had grown outside of their skull, missing arms and all that. I think it's more like a thousand years before the radiation dies down but im not positive

it was a nuclear reactor i think..it had a meltdown and then exploded (the explosion is what caused the radiation to spread) it looks like everything froze in time!! it gives me the goosebumps..imagine going in that place at night :eek2:

Thanks for makin me feel so old:ermm: Chernobyl was the worst nuke accident in world history. I'm shocked you didnt touch on it in your H.S. history classes.

Like, about the time you were born. I want to say 86 maybe 85. I'd have to look it up to be sure.

April 25th, 1986. Here is a tidbit of info for those interested. More can be found here (http://www.world-nuclear.org/info/chernobyl/inf07.htm)
On 25 April, prior to a routine shut-down, the reactor crew at Chernobyl-4 began preparing for a test to determine how long turbines would spin and supply power following a loss of main electrical power supply. Similar tests had already been carried out at Chernobyl and other plants, despite the fact that these reactors were known to be very unstable at low power settings.

A series of operator actions, including the disabling of automatic shutdown mechanisms, preceded the attempted test early on 26 April. As flow of coolant water diminished, power output increased. When the operator moved to shut down the reactor from its unstable condition arising from previous errors, a peculiarity of the design caused a dramatic power surge.

The fuel elements ruptured and the resultant explosive force of steam lifted off the cover plate of the reactor, releasing fission products to the atmosphere. A second explosion threw out fragments of burning fuel and graphite from the core and allowed air to rush in, causing the graphite moderator to burst into flames.

There is some dispute among experts about the character of this second explosion. The graphite burned for nine days, causing the main release of radioactivity into the environment. A total of about 12 x 1018 Bq of radioactivity was released. See also appended sequence of events.

Some 5000 tonnes of boron, dolomite, sand, clay and lead were dropped on to the burning core by helicopter in an effort to extinguish the blaze and limit the release of radioactive particles.

Not sure but I think the radiation levels at chernobyl were much higher than that caused by the atom bombs dropped on hiroshima and nagasaki. The chernobyl incident was a complete meltdown which would be much worse than 1 or 2 atom bombs.

I'm pretty sure the movie you are talking about is called Chernobyl Heart it is on HBO once in a while. It is the sadest documentry I have ever seen. A doctor there said there are thousands of childern on a waiting list for heart surgery 80% will die before they have the sugery. They do about 15 heart surgerys a day. They went into a hospital and all the kids had abnormal sized heads. Growths comming from differnt parts of their bodies, Different colored skin (green). IF anyone has the chance to wathc it DO!! I will change your prespective on your life.

i just watched a video on this in chemisrty class. most of the nuclear accidents arnt even reported. the chernobyl melt down was so bad because they didnt have any radiation containment centers. it melted through the reactor through the floor and into a river which people got their water from. it was a very interesting video. it said in the US they have the pressure of the media and politics so they have to plan for every problem that could occur. in chernobyl they didnt have the pressure of the media. sorry for the long post but i was really fascinated with the topic.

I remeber watching a movie about that in science class in 8th grade. That could of happended to us in I think the 70s? With the 3 Mile island, that would be pretty scary since I think its by philly.
