I was going to buy a Dodge Ram, and my friend told me that he knew some of the older years had bad transmissions and advised me not to buy one. He said he thought it was from 1990-1995 that the transmissions were bad, but he wasnt sure. Can anybody give me some information on these trucks, and if a 1996 has a good transmission (this is the year truck I was interested in buying)... Thanks

They were known for a bad trans through most of the years, especially through 1998. Just check it out good, most were do to pulling heavy loads, so if it was just used by your reagular joe to tow a small trailer then I would not worry about it. I have a 1997 and it runs great, no trans problems at all. Ask if they replaced the Plenum gasket, that is what will go first, its no big deal to do by yourself with minor tools and some time. Are you getting a good deal on it? I have one for sale cheap I could sell you, has a warrenty and everything. let me know I am in jersey

I just bought an 05 and it pulls like crazy with a trailer behind it through the mountains. Just don't look at the gas guage on the way to the races.

An aftermarket trans cooler will greatly help the dodge transmission. I am not saying it will make it last forever, but it will help it a lot.

i am a mechanic at a dodge dealership and yes they had some crappy ones around the '95 era but the went to a new style tranny in '98 and then changed it again in the middle of '02. they have great trannys now.

Just buy a Chevy or Ford. I think the only dodge Id buy is a mid 90's Cummins 5-speed.

my dads '90 had reverse repaced 3 times. just buy a ford. not trying to be "ford chevy" just talk to a lot of people about dodge first, poeple who own them. then make a decision
