New Berlin, NY - Until 2005, the National MX track at Unadilla Sports Complex only came too life once a year for the Motorcycle Outdoor Nationals, and it was re-seeded with grass until next years National.

In 2005, two more National events were added to the Unadilla list including the ATVA MX Nationals and now the GNCC Series, which represented the first time in several decades that any amateur bike rider would get an opportunity to ride on the National MX track during competition, which attracted a record crowd of over 1,800 riders to this weekend's event with the majority bike riders.

The ATV attendance wasn't anywhere near a record with just over 400 riders signing up, but it was up from the attendance at the Yadkinville Valley Stomp

By Saturday Morning, the rolling hills of central New York came to life with the Morning racers getting to be the first riders to break in the freshly cut trails through the woods, and for more information of the location and track layout check out the "Live Coverage" (http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=183148) thread for all the preview information.

#1 Bill Ballance was determined as ever to defend his National title even though he could still barely walk since his injury, but he received approval from the doctor to compete this weekend, and he was ready to give it his best shot even if it meant only completing one lap.

Hopefully, Next Year, Bill Ballance won't need to stand in front of the Yamaha rig for the bikes, but instead have a rig of his own. It may be wishful thinking, but it sure is fun to dream.

#4 Matt Smiley, headed to Unadilla in the 5th Overall position after #7 Chris Jenks moved into 4th after his win at Yadkinville, so Matt will have his work cut out for himself to preserve his #4 number for 2006.

Speaking of 2006, Matt Smiley, is extremely excited about the new "Outlaw" released by Polaris over the summer, and he was hoping to get a chance to race it in the GNCC Series before the end of the year, but it looks like he will have to wait till 2006.

The Polaris Outlaw looks very similar to its cousin the Predator with very similar fender lines and identical engines.

Admin

The difference between the two machines is very obvious once you take a look at the rear of the machine with its "IRS" Independent Rear Suspension, which is a first in mainstream production sport machines.

The IRS system provides plenty of ground clearance in comparison to a straight axle, which normally limits ground clearance to only a few inches. I have ridden IRS on Utility machines and it made a huge difference when trail riding and the ability to keep power to the ground, and if the new Polaris concepts works as well as Smiley has explained, the new Outlaw could eventually become king of the woods, and if anybody can make this new Polaris shine, it will be Matt Smiley.

For those interested in checking out the new Polaris Outlaw for themselves, the Polaris rig will be at the next two rounds, and at St. Clairsville, OH, the Outlaw will be available to test ride on a closed course.

#6 Bryan Cook and his fiancée Bonnie Hamrick were already waiting in staging to be called to lineup.

For the most part, the 2005 season hasn’t been the type of season that Bryan had hoped for after dealing with one problem after another earlier in the year, but the Wisp marked a turning point for Bryan with 6th Overall finish which was his only top 10 overall since almost making the podium at Big Buck with 4th Overall.

With the opening round on his home turf of North Carolina, Bryan Cook came back strong from the summer break and once again just missed the podium with a 4th overall, so with three rounds remaining, he was determined to make the most of what was left of the 2005 season and hope for a better start for 2006.

#23 Bryan Baker had his family along for the weekend, and his son was all geared up and spending some quality time with Bryan before the start of the race.

In Reverse, William Yokley's Father mounted up William's helmet camera, which shows how important family is in GNCC racing because it requires a group effort and family support to travel to all the races.

Yet another Father and Son combo, with Chris and Joe Borich on the line. The entire Borich family stands behind Chris Borich and his father Joe put his heart and soul into his son's racing program and has down so for years.

Over the summer the pair traveled all over the East Coast attending local events in preparation for the final four rounds of the season, and it paid off with Borich returning to the Podium at Yadkinville, NC with 2nd Overall behind Chris Jenks, which moved him closer to Bill Ballance in the lead, but the remaining three races were still very critical to the Borich team, so all eyes would be on Bill Ballance and Chris Borich because this race would be a major turning point in either direction based on the outcome.

#9 Brandon Ballance kept the Ballance team on the podium with his 3rd overall finish at Yadkinville, and he remained focused on the starting line this weekend.

Bill Ballance wouldn't have an opportunity to relax on the starting line like his brother as he was greeted by many fellow riders and fans giving him their best wishes, and Bill spent some time talking with future Pro riders, #66 Adam McGill and #706 Duane Johnson who both are currently running in the top 20 overall in points.

#8 Jeremy Rice and #7 Chris Jenks exchange wishes of good luck and good old handshake before the race, which is a good example of the friendship shared amongst the Pros and amateurs in GNCC racing.

#59 Bryan Hulsey made his return to Pro Racing at Yadkinville, NC and finished 14th and 21st Overall, which isn't a bad overall finish, but it wasn't anywhere near his season best finish of 13th overall and 2nd in Pro Am Class at the Orange Crush, so Bryan was back in hopes of improving upon his finish Pro finish at Yadkinville.

#152 Brent Sturdivant has only missed one race this season, and has had a sling of bad luck this season until the last round where he finished 3rd in Pro Am and 16th Overall, which was his best finish since the opening round in Texas.

#66 Adam McGill giving Brent the smell down in the photo was hoping to make the move to Pro this weekend, but according to the rules he needed 11 races in Pro Am to be eligible for the Pro Am Championship, so regardless of his finish at Unadilla, he will have the Championship wrapped up and move on to Pro at Powerline Park.

The runner up position in the Pro Am Class is still up for grabs with Missouri rider Duane Johnson currently holding down the second spot, but Scott Barron, Chris Bithell, and Joshua Ribley remain with in striking distance of Johnson and besides the Adam McGill the remaining top 5 positions are yet to be decided at the points race in Pro Am will come down to the final race of the season.

Scott Samuels was excited to finally have a GNCC race within a short drive of his home in Massachusetts, but it didn’t come without complications. Once he arrived at the track, his Honda 450R wouldn’t even kick over, so he was forced to tear down the engine and try to find the problem, and in the process he cracked his water pump cover, which would have ended his racing weekend. #14 Pro Rider, Andy Lagzdins; found out about his dilemma and lent him a water pump cover, so he could still race this weekend, and Scott couldn’t thank Andy enough for his generosity.

The battle for the Championship in 4 Stroke A is once again up for grabs between Todd Rothermel and Taylor Kiser. Rothermel looked to be on his way to wrapping up the Championship heading into the summer break with three consecutive wins, but he finished 6th at Yadkvinville with Kiser finishing 3rd, which brings them within a few points of each other, so Kiser wouldn't have the luxury of skipping the long drive from Florida this weekend if he wanted his chance at the Championship.

The battle for 3rd spot is just as intense with New York resident Cory Vickerd in a tight points battle with Travis Styles.

To make things even more interesting in the 4 Stroke A Class, #784 Brandon Sommers has wrapped up the 4 Stroke B Class Championship and has made the move to 4 Stroke A Class, and he is very capable of winning a race.

If their wasn't already enough excitement in the 4 Stroke A Class, #51 Rick Cecco has returned to racing after spending the majority of the season on the sidelines supporting his wife Traci Cecco in her pursuit of the Women's Championship

The race for the Championship in the Vet Class has also become tight between Steve Zapfe, Jeff Breast, and Kenneth Tincher. Zapfe with his three wins in a row early in the season has kept him at the top of the class all season, but consistent finishes by Brest and Tincher still has them within reach, but top three finishes in the final three rounds will be needed to catch Zapfe.

#330 Thomas Wright wrapped up the 35+ C Class Championship with three races to spare, so he decided to make the move to the Afternoon and try his hand at the Vet Class, which will make things even more interesting in the class.

Thomas Wright decided that he wanted an electric start on his Honda 450R, but he didn’t want to buy a 2006 with the Electric start option, so he did the next best thing and installed Goki electric start on his 05 Honda, and it fires right up.

#581 Chuck Glacken finally
Chuck Glacken has been my mechanic the majority of the season and has done a great job of preparing my LTZ400 for the races, and I haven't had one issue with him at the wrench, which has been a blessing.

After working on my Suzuki most of the season, he finally got the got his chance to race for the first time in a GNCC event aboard his brand new Yamaha YFZ450, and spent Friday and Saturday Morning getting his Kill switch installed along with some new Maxxis Razr tires on the front and rear.

If it weren't for Chuck, it wouldn't be possible for me to race anymore because I just don't have the time to wrench on the quads between races anymore, so a big thanks to Chuck for all his help.

#1 Bill Ballance reflexes didn't fade any over the summer as him and his brother Brandon catapulted their Yamaha YFZ450's off the line with Borich, Jenks, Rice, Cook, Smiley, and Houston all in chase as they sprinted to the first turn.

Bill Ballance swung his YFZ450 around the first turn throwing a rooster tail of dust with his Maxxis tires as Chris Borich makes his way past Brandon and in behind Bill.

Matt Smiley railed his Polaris Predator around turn one and was directly behind Bill Ballance in his cloud of dust.

Jeremy Rice sliced his way through the pack and in beside Borich with Matt Smiley and Brandon Ballance right behind them. The Four Stroke Tech riders were all bunched together in a tight group with Cook leading the way followed by Jenks and Houston.

The start was extremely dusty and if you weren’t out front you were eating some serious dust, but luckily this wasn’t the case for the rest of the track as dust wasn’t an issue at all compared to the last round.

With Brest in the lead, Vet Class newcomer Thomas Wright wasted no time getting back into the same groove and he pulled in behind Brest with Scott Smalley right beside him.

Wright would pass Brest and take over the lead by the end of the lap with Jay Subrick moving into 2nd place ahead of Jeff Brest followed by Byran Davis and Kenneth Tincher. John Rowlings was off to his worst start of the year since switching to Vet and was back to 11th Place, but he was hard on the gas as he worked his way through the pack.

#142 Gary Belbeck (Popo) still has one of the best looking Z400's at the track, which gets easier with each passing race as there seems to be fewer of them on the line after each race :(

Belbeck trained over the summer to reduce his muscle cramping and with the help of Cardio Stack he completed three laps and finished his best overall of the season:macho

Congrats Gary!!!

Junior

Jeffrey Vensel would grab the Holeshot in a class that seems to be slowingly fading away since Honda dropped its contigency and many of the riders jumped ship to the Vet Class.

Jeffrey would lead the first four laps of the race over and pull a four minute lead over Timothy Gale in 2nd place, but he would never complete the last lap, which gave Timothy Gale the Win and Pete Stadtmueller had his best race of the season finishing in 2nd place ahead of Kevan Logston.

Chuck Glacken was off to a good start with Timothy Gale right behind him, but he would clip a tree early in the first lap, which popped the bead on his tire.

He didn't have any spares, so headed over the Maxxis truck and they quickly rebeaded the tire, so he could return to the race. The race didn't turn out as well as Chuck might have liked, but he can't wait till his next chance to race, which might be at Powerline Park.

Michael Novak and Shawn Dunn would lock wheels heading through turn one and it would take several people to separate this tight bounded pair as the Honda became more acquainted with the Yamaha.

After waiting and watching the hillside for several minutes after the rest of the Pros and entire Pro Am Class emerged from the trees, I knew something must of happened to both Chris Borich and Matt Smiley, so I headed over to the Pro Pits to find Borich standing in the Pits watching the race as Joe and others worked diligently on replacing his front spindle with the tab for the tie-rod snapped off after Borich clipped a tree heading through the tight railroad section of the course.

With Bill Ballance in the lead, Chris had to stand track side and watch his hopes of a National Championship once again pass him by this season as he was dealt another setback, but in his normal never quit spirit, he wasn’t going to call it a day, instead, he couldn’t wait to head back out to put atleast a few more laps before the end of the race regardless.

As for Matt Smiley, unfortunately, his day of racing was over. Matt Smiley found himself stuck on the one of the hillclimbs and while he was attempting to get some traction, his Predator stood up and flipped backwards and to compound things another rider hit him in the back while he was flipping over which hurt his shoulder and back.

For Smiley, he decided to call it a day and let his body heal, so he would be ready to race the final two rounds.

William Yokley was holding back one bit on the MX course as he launched full speed over the jumps catching some descent air for a XC guy as he held down he 4th spot only a few seconds behind Ballance.

Roughly 10 seconds behind Yokley was Bryan Baker up to fifth place followed by Houston back to 6th and Brandon Ballance in 7th racing tire to tire.

Andy Lagzdins was quickly moving through the pack as he picked up three positions in the second lap along with a 5 foot long stick dragging behind him as he was obviously using some alternative lines to make his way through the pack.

Lagzdins was less than 2 seconds behind Gallagher in 9th as he rounded out the top 10 with Thomas Barrett dropping back to 11th place.

Sean Neidlinger skidded all the way back to tenth place

By the third lap, it was time for many of the Pros to head into the pits for fuel and some fresh goggles.

He realized that the rolloff canisters wasn’t installed on the goggles, so he would either have to turnaround or risk running the lap with no rolloffs.

The fourth lap would play havoc on several of the front runners as Chris Jenks lead and run at another Overall win in back to back races would come to an end when he ran into a bottle neck of riders stuck on the railroad tracks, so he decided to drop into the mud and try to get around to avoid waiting, which resulting in him finding himself buried in the marsh

Bryan Cook with some luck on his side was able to make his way through jammed up section without becoming stuck, which allowed him to jump into the Overall lead.

As track conditions deteriorated in sections and lapped traffic became an issue, many of the top runners began to run into problems, but Bill Ballance used his years of experience to make the right decisions and amazingly worked his way back up from 7th and into 2nd place behind Byran Cook, but with only one lap to go, Ballance would need Cook to make a major mistake to catch him as Cook had almost a two minute lead over Ballance.

Admin
10-07-2005, 08:07 AM
Michael Houston was third place and less than 20 seconds behind Ballance as he was only one lap away from the finish line and first podium appearance.

Coming on strong behind him was Bryan Baker aboard his K&K ATV Honda, and he also was looking for his return to the podium for the first time in years, which I believe was at the Ironman.

With the dry conditions and lack of rain sections of the mx track became really dusty near the end of the race.

Brandon Ballance would come through 13 seconds later in 4th place and just missing the podium, but it wasn’t for lack of effort as he posted the second fastest final laptime of 26:51, but unfortunately for him the fastest laptime belonged to Bryan Baker.

Bill Ballance removed his boot and rested his knee on his rear tire as the two hour long race took its toll on him, but his 2nd Overall finish all but wrapped up his sixth National Championship as he only needs a few points at Powerline Park to secure his #1 plate.

After racing hard for two hours, Bill requested his crutches to return to his pit and clean up after overcoming the odds of not only coming back to race in just under two months after seriously injuring his leg and to podium on top of it is simply amazing.

Sorry for the shorter coverage, but it has been a hectic two weeks and there is only so many hours in a day, but I hope to have more time for Power Line Park
