I understand that hotcam has came out with a new cam grind for the 400ex. It looks like, from the specs on hotcams website, that it is between the stage 1 and stage 3 cams. Old stage 2 is now the stage 3. Just woundering if anyone has bought this "new stage 2" cam yet, a if so how is it. Does it "tick" a little like the stage 1? How is the low end and high end power? If some one could compare it to a stage 1 or xr400 cam that would be awesome too. If there is a thread on this already I am sorry, but I couldn't find much on this topic.

Are you sure? Because I see people selling them on ebay and they are advertising them with the same specs as the new stage two on hotcams website. But this could also be people selling old stage two cams for new stage 2. If this is the case does anyone know when they will be available.

Well, I guess that answers my question then. I hope they come out pretty soon, I am going to be doing a rebuild sometime in the next couple of months. Thanks for your help though.

Specs on hot cams
Stage 1
9.0mm 246 9.0mm 246 Part # 1007-1
Stage 2 Old which is now stage 3
8.8mm 254 8.6mm 254 Part # 1008-2
Stage 2 new
9.0mm 254 8.9mm 248 Part # 1043-2

I talked to hot cams about new stage 2 shawn said the new stage 2 will give greater top end without sacrificing the bottom end like the old stage 2. I so already purchased the new stage 2. I have stage 1 right now. I never wanted to go to stage 2 because i would lose the grunt on the bottom. I cant wait!

keihin fcr, when you get the new cam you will have to keep us posted on what you think of it compared to the stage 1? How was the power increase with the stage 1? Where (rpm) was the biggest improvement with the stage 1.

keihin fcr, one more question on that stage 1 cam. Does it "tick" like people say it does? I mean is the valve tick alot louder than stock?

the stage 1 never ticked when i had the stock rev limiter. When i put the after market one in it did then. The ticking you here is excessive clearance. When i would run it at high rpm for a while and ride it alot i would have to adjust valves more often because the engine is rotating alot faster. I t wears faster so you have to adjust more often. Doesnt bother me any i havent had a problem. I f you do put a cam in buy a rev limiter too. I wont be able to tell you guys the difference in power band until the end of the month.

You guys know how to tell If I have a aftermarket cam? I bought my 440 and I have It all apart now I was wondering if I need to buy a cam or if it has one already? Anyway to tell?

If the cam doesn't have a decompression mechanism on it, it probably is an aftermarket cam. Other than that I would look for some kind of stamping on it.

Decompression mechanism? How can I tell?

Well it is a little hard to explain on here. But it is a mech. that is pressed on the cam between the cam sprocket and the lobes of the cam. if there is nothing between the sprocket and lobes then it doesn't have one and it is more than likely an aftermarket cam. Service Honda show a blown up view of the cam. This might help you. I can't imagine someone taking the time to build a 440 and sticking a stock cam back in, but you never know. Hope this helps.

Pay close attention to just behind the cam sprocket.

the TC cams use the stock decompression assembly too. i am not sure if any of the other aftermarket ones do or not. i would see if there is anything engraved on the cam to make sure. when drag racing if you never hit the stock rev limiter, i bet you have the stock cam.

The previous owner may wanted to keep the cam for another motor so they just threw the stock one back in before selling the motor.

But like cals said, check for some kind of engraving or markings.
