View Full Version : Just got my EX back together after powdercoating!

06-12-2002, 05:56 PM
I finished putting my 400 back together and thought I'd share it. I gussetted the frame and welded all the tubes fully. I powdercoated the frame in silver vein then topcoat with translucent red.
I did the stem, motor mounts, chain gaurd, my custom rear subframe, brake lever and throttle cover all in chrome.
the throttle housing, front fender brackets and footpegs in chrome smoke without the chrome base.
the exhaust heat shield in white silver vein.
I ground the welds out of the headpipe while it was off and I made and welded on footpeg extenders.

How did you get you "2001 model" frame sticker to stay on the tubing during the sand blasting and whatnot?

06-12-2002, 06:56 PM
I used a propane infrared unit to bake it. the sticker was carefully removed and put back plus then a clear laminate protector that wraps around the tube helps hold it there.

nice, If I can justify tearing mine apart, I will get it powder coated too. Why did you break yours down?

nice job cotering it, very perdy like onea dem new shiny store bought gooids (redneck acset)

believe it or not I wanted it coated and welded/braced up thats only reason. I had all the equipment and it was raining one day and it was forecasted to continue for a few days and I said the heck with it and started stripping.

How do you determine where to weld it at? How long did it take you to break it down and build it back up again?

06-12-2002, 09:03 PM
Thanks Chris! I originally was gonna do trans red over chrome like normal, seen a couple frames like that already and I wanted something different.

I welded the tubes wherever Honda didnt like the end of some of the tubes. then I added some more weld wherever they seemed to skimp a little. it took a little more than 2 hours to strip to bare frame, a couple days of welding, blasting, prep work and about 8 to put back together after all the powdercoating. I took my time and greased all the bolts and made sure everything was right.

thats why in most of my own stuff i put in prism powder, red , blue or silver sparkles

I wanted that textured look. I used a MIG, I'm not rich enuf to own a TIG yet. besides the factory is MIG also, I know this by all the little pieces of wire I chipped off around the welds when I was cleaning it up. Honda sure doesnt do a very good job cleaning up the frame before they paint it.

Did you make the sub and the airbox, if so would you be interested in makeing a few more for us fello exriders at a cheap price?

06-13-2002, 07:54 AM
I may make the subframes in the future since I still have the jig but mine is just MIG welded mild steel tubing, last time this was brought up it seemed everyone wanted chromoly which has to be TIG welded, which I will buy sooner or later.
I had to have someone else weld the aluminum airbox for me and I dont think he will want to do a bunch plus the airbox has no lid and everyone wants one with a lid.

So, how do you powder? I understand the tear down and prep work, but is powdercoating something i can do in my garage? I really want to get mine done, its just that i would have to drive about 3 hours just to have it looked at. I talked to a guy that had a BRIGHT orange frame on his race car and it looked SOOOOO sweet! he said to use a white base and the florecient orange over that.

Is this a project that an average jo can do? what the heck is a "propane infered unit"? Let me know...i really want to work on my frame! I hate how the paint has come off in several diff. spots!

Hey how hard is it to powder coat a frame with the infared heater. How long does it take. Do u use and lazer thremometer? I might build one this summer, i have all the supplies, powder, gun, and heater. I am going to do my frame silver vein and yellow. Can you post a pic of your infard heater? This is the one i am going to build.

Hey,whats that deal around your swingarm bolt?it looks like a aftermarket frame.

So your telling me,when you gusset the 400 frame like tyou did,you get that extra metal around the swing-arm bolt, like a aftermarket frame? Looks stronger and what not, i want that done to mine.

Thks,
Pro

06-17-2002, 05:50 AM
yes that extra bracing around the swingarm bolt is part of what I did. I fully welded all of the tubes and added the braces to the shock towers. if you haventy noticed yet, look on your stock frame and youll see all kinds of places where Honda didnt weld the tubes fully.
