I just bought a used 2001 250ex. I'm just giving it a detailed look over to see what needs done (if anything).

With the rear wheels off and the rear end on a jackstand, if you wiggle the rear axle on the left side of the differential, it has a little play. The play is up and down, there is no play from the left wheel to the right wheel.

I have tried to tighten the bolt on the right side of the differential, but it didn't do much and I didn't want to over tighten.

Does this sound like worn out bearings? If so, do I have to dissassemble the diff to change them?

How much play is normal....if any?

Thanks for helping a newbie.

It's your bearings, there worn out. It's not sposed to have any play at all, I would replace them before you ride anymore because it could eventually trash the axle etc.

Do you have to crack open the diff to get to them?

Should I just replace the bearings or is there something else that's typically replaced along with them?

Is it a hard job? (scale of 1-10)

Thanks.

I used to have a 250ex and we had to replace the bearings in the rear. you just replace the bearings and the seal to keep water out etc. all that comes with the replacement kit.

Also i would recommend to get a Clymer's repair manual they work wonders.

as far as on a scale to 1-10 i would say mabe 4 or so im not sure it was pretty easy to do for me. I had a service manual and it helped out alot. good luck.:)

Check this out.

http://www.servicehonda.com/hard%20parts/atv/trx250ex%20sportrax%2001-02/trx250ex%20frames%20page.htm

On the scroll bar to the left go to "rear final gear."

You can see where the bearings and everything is. I though it might help a little

The kit from motoman says it only comes with 2 bearings and 2 seals.....

By looking at the diagrams on bikebandit, I think I need 3...right?

2 that go inside the differential and 1 that goes on the outside of the rear left swingarm tube.

Does the kit from motoman come with all 3?

Thanks.

I bought the motoman kit and it had every thing I needed to replace it. I can't remember if it came with 2 or 3, but it being a kit it comes with everything you need.
