We have a 13.5:1 with the Sparks aggressive drop in, BC pipe, CRF ign., FCR carb, filter, yada yada yada...Anyway tear it down next week to get new piston and port work..Heres the dilemma: Re-cam while its apart or not? BTW its a MX race bike and a duner, that I have fun making people say "Huh, pretty quick 450"

1. Stick with the Sparks
2. Go to the HC stage 2
3. Go to the WebCam 208/921

CRF- .380, .356, .249, .272
HC2- .398, .315, .248, .268
Web 208/921- .408, .342, .282, .298

Shorter the duration, the better acceleration?
Longer the duration, more revs?

The Sparks flat fell on its face at 7000 grand on the dyno..Id like to pull through that a little more..But it gets there faster then any other bike Ive ridden..Ive yet to be pulled out of the hole by another Honda. Will the porting make it come alive? Move on to another cam? I need springs and a cam gear for the HC and the Web, so is it money well spent? Will I notice a difference? Cam experts, be my tie breaker.

I'm not a cam expert but I rode a few other engine set up's so here's my 2 cents. I really like my Baldwin motor, not sure if it's all of the things making it a good package but I know it pulls alot stronger than a motor with the HotCams Stage 2. The motor with the HRC cam pulled strong on top. The Sparks X4 race cam felt strong. The other Sparks cam is the 02 CRF cam which is good for the price in my opinion. Never got the chance with the Web cam.

I'm not sure on how much the porting did because I got it all at once.

I love "Cam Talk"!

I absolutly say go with the 208.

Definetly get that Sparks out of there and let her breath.

Depending on your piston to valve clearance, you can tweak that cam in the direction of the power band you want too.

If you retard, it helps the top end with more of a "hit". If you advace, it will smooth out the power band with more bottom end.

Do automotive drag racers use short duration cams?

Absolutely not --
Go with the big one :) -- especially since you're running big compression numbers and have the engine opened up. You might also consider the HRC cam - it might be a nice compromise between the Web you're looking at and the Sparks/CRF. Plus it's an OEM cam that's a brand new part - not a reground cam with a smaller base circle & also doesn't require any of the head modifications that can reduce the reliability of the valvetrain.

Jersey, you already know the answer to that one. Unfortunatly theres no new break through cam out on the market. Its either HRC or HotCam Stage 2. The HRC gives a slight advantage in the upper rpms and the stage 2 is a strong mid range producer. Its which ever one suites your riding style best.

I think for a track you'd be better off with the stage 2 and if your running around in them there pine barrens down in south jersey for fun, id go with the HRC.

best cam out is the web mysto....

I have ran three webs in my 450

only problem is clay check the mysto. shortened valve guides springs and gear required..

I'd have to say go with the 208, since Dan did my top end and
I put in the 208 and his piston it rips! Plenty on bottom end and def. pulls hard on top. Smooth all the way through.

if anyone is interested i have a high overlap Megacycle X2 cam for sale.

I measured both at 0.040" lift and the mega had 48 degrees of overlap compared to ~38 degrees of overlap at 0.040" lift with WEB 208, and about the same max lift (mega slightly more).

I'd would be running the mega, but my new 550 setup is optimum with the 208- not to say a 450 would be ;)

I built a 480 with the Mysto..It revved well but didnt accelerate how I wanted it to so that one is out for sure...

The 208 will require the guides to be pushed down and the Web cam gear or the holes in the stock one to be elongated.

Gabe Im 90% sure that the Web 208 is a new cam, not a re-grind??

we just built a 450r with a sparks pistons and a 208 grind. we had plenty of clearance. I havent been able to compare with any other bikes yet but next week we will have it at the drags and have it radared.

another interesting point about the 208 is that apparently they have two masters for the same grind #.

In other words, I've found two different spec cards for the same 208/921 grind number. One with 262 EX duration, and the other with 270 EX duration.

Be sure you get or double check your 208 when you install in....
