ya i agree with wicked, quit flamin the 250ex guys, whats up with all the flames against the 250ex's let people do what they want to do to their quad. we have just as much fun with our 250s as you guys have with your 400s so if its keeping us happy then who cares what type of quad people have.

I not going to flame on anyone elses quad, you ride what is comfortable for you.
As for the 250EX Im pretty impressed at what they can do. When riding at Turkey Bay Striker hung with all the 400s, and kicked up plenty of dirt when I was behind him :D

I have nothing against 250ex's i think they are great machines. Perfect for intermediats. I was just so blown away to hear of people that seem to be quite skilled at riding to the point they need better suspension and what not. I was just simply stateing why waste your money. Once you've mastered the 250ex, move on up. thats the whole point of them. Sorry it came out wrong. 250ex's are great litle machines. I think more people should have them instead of just jumpin on a 400.

I told my wife, "I don't care HOW much money it will cost, I'm gunna have fun, dammit!".

She said, "You might wear the pants in this family, but I'm the one who washes them!"

I told her, "Hey, I'm just going to get them dirty again!".

CUZ I GOT OVER 6000.00 BUCKS IN A 250EX. AND YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT I DONT CARE PROABLY WILL BE CLOSER TO 10,000.00 IN A COUPLE OF YEARS. DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE THAT MUCH INVESTED? PROABLY NOT. FIXED UP 400 AND 300 ARE A DIME A DOZEN. AND I DONT LIKE TO HAVE WHAT EVERYBODY ELSE HAS, SO I GOT A 250EX THAT IM PROUD OF. AND MOST OF THE WORK HAS BEEN DONE BY ME, HALF THE PEOPLE THAT YANK ON A 250EX CANT EVEN CHANGE A PLUG OR THE OIL WITHOUT RETURNING TO THE DEALER. MY NEXT THING TO DO, IS TO POWDERCOAT THE FRAME AND START CHROMING THE **** OUT OF THE ENGINE. AM I WASTING MY DOLLARS? PROABLY, BUT NO ONE ELSE HAS A 250EX WITH SUCH A FRAME, OH BABY! WILL I BE THE ENVY, THEN?

I figured out that it doesnt really matter what make, size, or brand of quad a person has, they are very rarely sold for what the input of the investment is. So I wanted something that was at my level of mechanical ability to work on and learn from. These are the most simple little engines to maintain. And I always remember, there's only so fast you can ride through the woods in ky & wv.

id rather have a beat up atc110 than nothin. at leasts you can ride. Not everyone can do that. a 250 is a great quad, although i have never ridden one, i have ridden a recon and they are a blast. i have buddies that love to ride 250s just cuz they are small and easy. dont flame the 250. it is a great quad.

hey maybe the reason they dont go buy a new 1 is becuz theres somthing called money & people may not have enough to go buy a bigger 4 wheeler & fix it ^? but thats just my opinion? I acctually like seein the 250ex's &x's & 300's go out there & whoop all those 400s on a moto track seen it done before! so u better watch out boy! like roostfrom250ex said he has $5200 in his & if he bought a 400 & fixed it ^ it would be around $8000 at least all fixed ^!

Yep im a dick!. And By the way, I've rebuilt my 250r engine from the ground up. I do all my own work. And all i was saying is that instead of spending all that money on a 250ex you could buy a 400. And ya I am oringinal. Im putting a wr426f engine in my 400ex frame.
Call me a dick call me a jerk. I really don't care i just wanted to no why people would do such a thing and now i know.

gosh i wonder why people with 400ex has such big egos...

i might have one but i am not jerky like you all.. i realize my 400ex isnt perfect i realized i could have lived with my 300ex that i used to have but i wanted more power...

but since i wanted more power i should have gotton the raptor and just extedend the swing arm a arms.. cause that motor alone has enough power to smoke 400ex and also can back up..

:huh i that is what you are thinking well ... i am just telling it how it is .. the 400ex is good but it also isnt the best to mod up either casue it is always playing catch up to the other machines..

just like the 250ex is playing catch up to machines in its class so really you guys dont have no room to talk about how bad the 250ex is ..

when the 400ex isnt much better in there class

does anyone know what i just said?? i try to make it sound better if you all need me to

06-13-2002, 11:00 AM
but, most people dont keep their 400s stock forever, so they aint playin catch up no more

Yellow rider. Very good point. That makes total sense. But the 400ex is still the best stock machine for MX in my opinion. so I figured I'd start with the best. (and im puttin a 426 in her) Lets see what a raptor does with that hahaha. Of course I'm not including a z400 here. Because it just came out. And by the looks of things it's gonna be the next best Mx machine. Last weekend i watched z400 blow away raptors in some poker run sand drags. To say the least I was WOWED.

o yes. and . I wouldn't be surprised if people could beat me on a 250ex. But those people could get a 400ex and be that much better. Also. YOu could spend all sorts of money on a 250ex and still not be faster then a stock 400ex. Thats what im trying to get at. Just that there is a fine line betewn going to far on mods and buying a faster bike.. Did that make any sense???

Some people don't buy a 250EX planning to hop it up, but end up doing it slowly over time as a matter of preventative or required maintenance. For example, if one bends an axle, why not replace it with a "Brand X" with a wider stance and a lifetime guarantee. Yes more money than OEM, but better performance and hopefully wont have to replace it as often. Same example can be used for items such as air filters, shocks, grab bars, skid plates, A-arms, etc.
Just a thought.

j/k man...
and the z 400 looks like it will be the king of the mx track, but at the same poker run no one had the balls to race up against the raptors 250rs, and nice 400exs there, but they did drag race and they took everything off the line, i almost took forums' buddies 250r but i had to wheelie off the line:mad:
and the 250ex is a nice machine my sis has one and it wheelies good handles good and is alot funner than those blasters.....
i don't care if you mod your 250ex to **** but why?
i thinks i better stop before i look this threaded up, and 250ex is a great machine for trails and small mx...

i agree about "dont dog the 250s" but i dont understand when you can get a 400ex for about 5200 that you would buy a 250ex and put 2 grand in it and still not beat a 400ex..............i guess i think like this because i dont like settling for 2nd or 3rd best..................HONDA 4 LIFE!!!!

Ok. I am very sorry for beeing a dick if i was one.SORRY!. But I just figured you could spend less money on a 400ex and be faster then mod up a 250ex. I do think the 250ex is a great machine. But to buy one and then mod it all out just seems wierd to me. it was only a question, sorry to flame.

250ex's are by far the best intermediat sport quad!

06-13-2002, 10:24 PM
How about everybody stops *****ing

Yes a 250ex is alright but it will never compare to a 400ex. Spend your $5200 on your 250ex while us smart riders spend it on a well worth it machine. I've spent a lot more than $5200 on mine and am happy and you might be too. But i wouldnt waste my time with a 250ex.

Well thats just you. I got a 250ex cause I was inexperienced. Yes I do want a fast quad now that I am really good. But I will probably never get a 400ex. I am spoiled by the reverse. Especially since the Z is out and has rev. But the only reason I got the mods on mine were because I had some cash but not a lot and decided to play and make my quad a little faster. But also so I could beat my buddie on his stock 250ex!! I am happy with what I did cuz afterwards I can beat my buddies '87 250X. I am tons quicker. why doesnt anybody make fun of them. They are slow!! just top out high. The only thing I like about them is there is so much crap out to modify them.(250X). But I like my 250ex and when I do get a fast quad I will always have my 250ex in my garage. And to answer your ?, yes they do make aftermarket suspension for the 250ex. and YES even your guy's modified 400ex's like your 440's are still playing catch up. Do a few mods to a raptor or a DS650 and see if your still laughing. Heck do everything motor for motor between a Z400 and a 400ex? And see who will win! I love honda and all. especially for reliability. But for pure power, suzuki wins. at least they are never afraid to make a statement!! Look at the late 80's. 500cc 2 stroke! And honda is afraid of law suits and laws just to come out with something to keep up with the compitition!! Honda starting to tick me off to be honest. Hope they come out with something good for the 2004 lineup! cuz thats when i plan to get a new quad

I love my brothers 250EX. Its just so much fun. My brother got it, not because he couldn't use a clutch, but because he liked the Recon and wanted something with out racks. Which leads to the 250EX, I don't think he could have made a better choice, and either does he. Right now he has a DG bumper and he wants to add more stuff to it. It may not compare to a 400EX, but thats because we don't have the money to sell the 250EX and then buy a 400EX, it took me 13 years before I could get a 300EX. Every now and then he wants a little more power, so he uses my 300EX and I am more than happy to use his 250EX, it gives my left hand a break I guess, I just wish he would give my clutch a break, I think I am going to need a new one some time soon. Anyways, the 250EX is a great bike from beginners up to expoerts because its just a great bike to have fun on. And on the trail it will keep up with just about anything. Providing that the trail is tight enough. So I guess I am saying, why not mod the 250EX, you would just be making a great bike even better.

250EX's are great and all, but whats wrong with a used 300ex or 400ex? You can get a great used 400ex for less than $3700! No matter what, a 250ex will never beat a 400ex. Im comparing quads, not people here cuz I know one of you will come off sayin "o yea, you dummie, I can beat _____'s 400ex through the trails around his house".
I used to have a 300ex, I did a few mods to it cuz I never thought my dad would let me get a 250r (2 years ago). It was a great quad, but when I got my R I realized how much difference there really is. You just cant compare the sport quads to the high-performance quad.
Brokeitin2, just wondering what you have against the bigger EX's? The only real thing is heard was "you dont wana be ordinary". I realize its your money and you'll spend it how you want, but you will probably regret it, and we're trying to help.

06-14-2002, 10:11 PM
I dont have anything aginst bigger quads. I have rode 400's & 300's, even 250r's. All of these machines are higher in performance, but its just the riders choice. I dont race all the time no need for a clutch. Like I have said before, my left hand has been injured, arthritis, working a clutch is limited for me. Yes, I can ride clutch machines for 10 mins or so. Then my hand goes numb and I am then useless on one. The 250ex allows me to ride aggressive all day without too much pain. I would love to have a 250r auto clutch, till then Im stuck racin in the young riders class at the local track. And trust me, anything is possible if you want to sink enough money into it. Im not saying a 250ex will ever beat a 400ex on any track but dude I'm tellin you, they wont be too far behind if its built right. By this time next year, I assume I will have a $9500 investment in a little bike. Not everyone agrees with me, but its mine and its paid for. But the actual reason I like this little bike is, with it i a woods race I dont have to worry about my hand stiffening from working a clutch. Im 29. and have finger stiffening problems with my left fingers. Well the 250ex cures that. Thats why I will eventually have a quad that no one else will even attempt to build. Its my chance at racing, even if its a small bike.

i got tired of reading and skipped over the last few, so this might have already been said, but this is my opinion:

400=faster and quicker than 250
V8=faster and quicker than V6, BUT! there is still a MINI TRUCKIN magazine. even though i have done much to my 400 yet, i am a custom kind of guy, if i had a 250ex then eventually it would be the baddest 250ex out there, and even though i might not be able to beat a 400 in a drag, that guy runnin a stocker 400 would be 200% jealouse of my badass 250. i ride a 400, and my lil bro rides a 250, he may not be as fast, but you can sure make them things look awsome, and make them quick, so if that's their bag of chips, then let it be.

with that said, i have a question, does anyone make a bore and stroke kit for the 250's, cause if you could bore those out to bout 275-280, then with the right other parts they could be fast as ****.

p.s. if your not looking for speed, but more for luxury then the 250 is the way to go, it's got reverse for one, and for those out there who aren't their own mechanics, you don't have to mess with a chain

06-15-2002, 07:31 PM

I bought the 250EX for my wife. I have a 400EX. Niether of us race. My wife can ride a quad with a clutch but doesn't want to deal with it. Shes gotten progressively better, and now she wants to go faster, but still doesn't want to deal with a clutch, (Not everyone is a wannbe racer). Why are you so worried about it? Different strokes for different folks. To each their own, ETC. That is why you make your 250EX faster. Its like the previous post RIDER PREFERENCE!!!!!!!!!!!.

Some people would also rather have a shaft instead of a chain, not to mention the 250EX has reverse and the 400EX doesn't, my brother also wanted the 250EX because it had a shaft drive, since he likes to go mudding, and I will be the first to tell you, that thing went through everything and anything, while my 300EX was stuck more often than not. My uncle who has a Grizzly 660 was suprised when everytime he looked back he would see my brother on his 250EX right there with him, and they went through some pretty thick mud, of course he would also look further behind him and see me stuck and have to turn around and come get me. So that would be another reason to keep the 250EX and mod it instead of getting a 300EX or 400EX. $$$moneyex-, I would go with the second one.

i agree with 01TRX300EX, i went with my dad and little brother, and my little brother was getting through just as much, if not more mud than me(on a 400EX), and my dad(on a Prarie 650) were. and i would have to get out and push if the trail dead-ended, while they just popped it in reverse
