My sons 86 250r, is having a small problem. Whenever you give it gas, there is no power in the bike.

We changed, the jetting, checked the carb, changed the spark plug, and we cleaned out the air filter.

This all started when we went to Hatfield McCoy "There's a lot of Water there"

Any ideas on what could be the problem?

its the reed valves. i just had the same prob on mine. i did every thing you did and nothing worked and sure **** it was the reeds.
i just went and bought them today and there were like 25 bux for the reeds and the gaskets were like 12 bux or summin like that.

Go through the process.

First, compression check.

Second, spark plug chop/jetting check. What is the spark plug telling you about the jetting?

Reeds

leak-down test

if you find nothing, get a spark plug tester and check the spark intensity.

If, after all this you don't find anything odd, get back with us and we can proceed from there. However, if these tests don't tell you anything, you may just have to rebuild and start replacing components until you find the magic cure.

When my reeds went bad they were cracked. well they shattered. just look for cracks or holes. and you may want to do a compression test after you get them replaced. but im like 80 % sure that its the reeds.

what troy forgot to mention is the bike revs fine in neutral. when in gear it has no power. ive been talking with him and i honestly would say its a hands on trouble shoot. I asked him all sorts of questions. it sounds electrical to me. btu then again, it also sounds liek a motor with no compression.

tearing the motor down IS THE LAST THING you would do, jeez some people....
I wouldnt touch the reeds just yet troy, if you do thats fine but you have to go buy a intake gasket then... and if the reeds are shot, time to upgrade with a cr250 rad valve.

dood. im telling you. its the reeds man. i had the same prob. i would start and rev fine. but when i tryed to go i was sooooo doggish. u could get it to move but it wouldnt go worth a ****. its not that hard to get to the reeds i when i went to order mine they had them in stock with the gaskets.
its the reeds.

upgrade to a cr250 rad valve? i dont know why people say that- i had the cr250 rad valve and i didnt like it. i went and bought a trx rad valve and am much happier with it, so if ya'll want ive got a cr250r rad valve with like 20 hours on it if anybody wants to buy it

Any chance you had water or bad gas in the new tank?
