i am not too learned on the crf 450 engine.:p so my question is that do these engines (CRF TRX) 450s motors wear out really fast?? 6months racing 1 year then new top end (valves piston ext...) the reason why i ask is that wen i went into honda they said reialibilty was reduced because of the heat generated by the stroker and so on bla bla bla. could you please shine some light on this subject. thanks josh

Well it is a high performance 4 stroke so it may need more maintenance than the 400ex but from my experience mine has been ultra reliable. I have raced all year on it with no real problems.. other than hitting stuff :(

It's a great motor but will probably require a little more maintenance than say a 400ex motor.

Has anyone had to do a rebuild on a stock piston? I have an '86 350x that has never been opened. Any chance I could get 20 years out of a 450? :ermm: I ride about 40 hours a year.

I doubt you can get 800 hours out of the motor.....plus in 20 years you will be too old to be riding anyways.

Never too old...plus I am only in my 20's...sheesh!

How many hours could I expect on a 450 piston? I am coming off a banshee...so I hope it will last longer than that at least.

yeah my ques was along the same lines as his. the reason why i ask these ques is i thought it was fishy when he made it sound like it was a strictly race quad 05,06 450r and that you would have to fork over the dough to play EVERY YEAR. i under stand that regular riding requires regular maintance, but come on, a fresh top every year or so, i call bull sheyet on that due to the fact that its a honda, and bloddy unlikely that honda would release a quad that would wear out so damnned fast. but i guess it is a R series and maybe it is a RACE quad, but in stock form SHOULD give years of unsurpased service. please chime in with yer two cents i have an opean mind

Realibility is out the arse with greatness.

I dont know what some of you n00bs are talking about the 450r engine not lasting.. That is the stupidest thing iv ever heard. Yes, its going to need things like new oil etc....

You must be a total idiot if you never change your oil in the first place with any quad. Just maintain it and it will last forever..

and for all you people who havent relized this yet...

ITS A HONDA!:macho

Reliability is why I got a Honda. Just bought mine tonight...picked it out of four stacked in their crates. They are going to put it together in the morning. I was just curious since you can't get the extended warranty on the CRF. I did however get the two year on this one for $69...on sale. Yes I am a nOOb to the 450R...that's why I asked. I am sure no matter what it will outlast the Yami.

I ride more than 40hours/year...but this is my wife's quad so I should have said it will get ridden 40hours a year. Although it may get a few hours from me if the banshee goes down.

dude, sell the banshee.........buy the wife a 400ex.....and keep the 06 450r for youself!!!!!

are you crazy?!!! buying a brand new 06, and then handing it to your wife........while you ride around on an outdated shee??

that's insane!!!

I think its kinda funny that a guy that is riding on a shee is asking about reliabuilty... :D

Any way don't worry about it. Its a honda and at stock it is bullet proof just like most honda's.

I raced MX on a stock motor for a year and when I tor it down it looked new.

I have never had any mechanical problems from my 450R! I LOVE IT! I have had my 450R since they came out! This is the best quad I have ever bought.

Transplant2 - If you give your wife the 450R she will smoke you!

I've blown my tranny once and had the lower rod bearing lock up on it once. I put allot of hard high RPM hours on mine though.

i got my 05 R in July something and i'm guessing ill have to rebuild it in about 2 years or maybe more...and believe me...i run the piss out of it.

if you give your wife the R she will kill you. keep the R for yourself man and get her a new 400ex w/ reverse....cause unless your wife is like Tracy Cecco or Stephanie Parton she may get hurt.:ermm:

Please...she is coming off a built banshee...the stock R is slower. 400ex...wait till she hears that...I will get plenty of seat time when she is not riding. :) I am not sure why everyone thinks banshees are slow. Maybe stock...but they are both ported and high comp...blah blah blah. I don't need any flame wars but I just don't see it. Besides...I did buy an R finally. Reason being I didn't want to rebuild the top end every 3 years. So if the R needs rebuilt the same...I have gained nothing. Well...I did get more low end and better suspension.

Dude im not being rude or nothing but banshees are the non most reliable bike out there 2 strokes just dont last that long and there ****ty to fix cause they always have problems i personally hate banshees cause yeah they might be fast when you build them up but unless then screw em there ***** a 450 is 100 times more reliable and trust worthy then some stupid *** banshee well if i was you id sell the banshee and get a used 440ex or a 450r for you and the wife i d ont think your wife needs to get a 400ex if she can handle a cranked up banshee so ask her and get her wut she wants ok Mitch Perry

if she can handle it then get her the R and sell your banshee and get yourself an R aswell... its much more reliable and more fun to ride. Plus they are not going to make the shee nex year so if I were u get the R...just my 2 cents

This could be one of the stupids things ive heard, after 5 xc races alot of trail riding, inclduing over 1000 miles (dunno hours didnt pay attention) at the piute trails i tore my motor down to go 13:1 and in looked brand new. Other then the VERY LIMITED number or crank problems, they have been grate. Im sure honda fixed the crank issue in 06s as well.

PREVENTATIVE MANTINECE, it helps ;)

I think the 06 r won't last as long as the 05's or 04's because this year they have them revving 10000 rpms instead of the 7950 like the old ones. This will cause more wear on everything. They also have made other performance tweeks that will somewhat limit engine life but the motor is still built really well.

Thats what i thought.. i came from a 400ex to an 06 R n i feel like im being really hard on it just cuz of how high it revs when im actually being a pvssy trying to take it easy
